First tuned M3 - Burger Motorsports hits 480whp

From another forum~

"Hey guys,

Was able to get our new 2015 M3 over to the dyno today for a little test and tune action. It has around 100 miles on the clock... Fuel is 91 octane + a can of octane booster to bring octane up to around 93 octane.

To start I did a few baseline runs in 4th and 5th gear. The best of which was 427rw in 5th gear. Boost was around 19.5psi peak, timing around 9 degrees up top, and I was fairly disappointed with the output. I'm not sure what might be holding back power but we'll have to dive in to that as we get further in to the R&D process.

Not satisfied I decided to whip up a Stage1 alpha tune and after some work had boost up to 24psi and power up to a more respectable ~480rw.

Work continues!"

This is a piggy back tune I'm assuming.

That is correct.. I'm guessing this will be like the f1x and be very tough to crack for a complete reflash.

Yes. You wont be seeing an aftermarket flash option for many years. Unless you have some friends at the NSA.

I find it strange that he was disappointed with 427RWHP on a engine that is supposed to have 430HP on the flywheel... Was he expecting more RWHP than the stated flywheel HP number???

It's a substantial improvement though. Even though it's a fairly crude "tune" that just manipulates the MAP sensors, tricking the DME and hence more boost is added (even though the DME still thinks it's running stock boost...)

And this before E85 blends, or anything. This car is going make well into the 500 whp range with simple bolt-ons and more octane. Awesome

427rwhp stock sounds great. Hopefully this is accurate and can be confirmed by other tests.

I put a JB+ on my 135i and it brought that car up to where it should have been from the factory. That extra 50 goes a long way

Yesssss! Sub'd. The only thing is I figured 24psi would have yielded more power. Those torque numbers are looking solid!

I'm more interested in how that intercooler copes with 10 consecutive runs...

I wouldn't call it crude, his piggyback has come a LONG WAY in terms of capabilities and features (assuming its similar in fashion to the one for the 335i). Will need to see what information he releases once he has more than a "alpha" tune for it (hes only had it for two days).

In terms of the power, he said he was dissapointed not with the power output, but rather the power output at 20psi with 9* ignition advance. On the N54, we are used to seeing much higher numbers than that. Given the S55 was touted as a much better engine, i think he was hoping for a little more efficiency - like hitting those numbers at 15-16psi or with less ignition advance. I suspect a catless exhaust and air intake should help quite a bit.

He is basing it on the amount of flow the turbos are supposed to have, boost pressure the engine runs, and timing he is seeing. This in conjunction to RB turbos which are sort of the industry standard on the N54. Terry is very, very, very knowledgeable about anything that BMW has turbocharged.

Also, I'm amused that you think piggybacks still work that way. The days of map clamping and map sensor attenuation are LONG gone. Terry developed hardware and software that directly controls the electronic wastegate actuators themselves...no easy feat.

That looks like flywheel hp unless the stock rwhp is putting out 427 lol. I think someone made a typo?

perhaps someone more knowledgeable about dyno testing can chime in, but I'm quite pleasantly surprised to see the S55 dyno at well over 400 whp (significantly more than the previous dyno we saw). what would a stock e90M have dyno'd at under similar conditions (i.e. dynojet, corrected/uncorrected, etc.)?

I'm thinking its the 5th gear pull thats skewing the numbers. Isnt 3rd or 4th the typical gear to do a dyno pull?

And it's stock 427 at the wheels? Meanwhile the SportAuto was 465 crank and supposedly showing 380 peak at the wheels? Too much spread don't you guys think?

doubtful. 5th is 1:1 iirc. I dyno'd my old e9x in 4th and 5th and it didn't make much of a difference in power on the dyno. IIRC the torque was a touch higher in 5th but it was negligible. to be fair, im no expert.

To answer some other comments, the e9x typically is between 335-360whp on a dynojet in stock form (not gonna count EAS's "magic" dyno that reads way too high).

Also, thrilled with stock power. That said, the tune is impressive but looks like small timing drop / correction right before 3000 RPM. clearly a first pass tune, but that would be unacceptable on my car
