Test drove the Jag F Type R Coupe- Pics
First off, it wasn't a long test drive; maybe 4 miles max but it was enjoyable to say the least. My apologies as I didn't even realize this car doesn't have back seats LOL. For some reason I thought it was a 2+2.
Anyways, the drive was a blast. The most noticeable part of the car is the exhaust. My lord its loud for a stock system with huge battleship barks and higher rpm growls. I blew by a Mustang GT and at the light, when he caught up, he said "wow that thing is loud". I really enjoyed running the rpms up and down the range to hear the exhaust symphony. The power is strong- its every bit of 550 hp but with a traditional tq converter 8 speed, Im sure there is a more power loss than of course PDK or DCT. The tranny wasn't that bad, it shifted down when I wanted it to and held gears thru higher rpms. I ran the car in all of the dynamic modes including steering, suspension, and two other modes I forgot the names. I can see why Carlos Lago hit 122 traps in the quarter and 3.6 zero to 60- the active diff is well quite active and the 295x30x20 tires held well. I didn't really have to feather the throttle all to much from a dig to get it moving. The car is tossable and I was able to press its rear end in a sharp turn and slide it and then straightened it out. The chassis is rock solid and you can feel it over mild bumps and undulations and in the turns. It does show its weight but its not expected to be as grippy as a 991. The steering was taut with mild understeer that was easily alleviated with throttle press and I really never felt out of control. My good friend runs the store so he let me rape the car. I hit 134 in the streets on a wide open car free street. This car really moves well and it looks just as good as it moves if not better IMHO. I drove a not so pretty, to me, reddish car with a sticker at 104k and invoice at 97k. The car leases well (not bmw well) for those who care as the captive agent is Chase and the MF is .00143 at 36 months with a 55 residual at 36 months for 5k miles per year. I just contacted my friend and owner at OE tuning and he has done several mods on these cars including a tune which gets it 50 whp and pulley which will get it around 90-100 whp combined. This is exciting to me because I like to do BPU's when it comes to engine mods. Again, the exhaust was incredible, loud, barking, screaming and NOT docile which I like. So I wont have to mod the exhaust if I get one. Maybe Ill get it.... maybe.

Great write up Vic; judging by your pics, that red seems a bit soft for an fairly aggressively styled car.
Any view on interior fit & finish? Last time I sat in a XFR (4 years ago), I didn't bother asking for a test drive... |

Great write up. Thanks a lot. I have to drive it too now just to hear this exhaust. How does it compare to the PSE on the C2S?
I've been thinking about this car but issue I had was leg room. Pretty small cabin. Maybe I need to sit higher. 911 has a much more spacious cabin for tall drivers.

FYI the exhaust is no closer to me in the SL--- its just loud as I said and as the Mustang driver so noted as well when we spoke at the light. Two feet LOL.... come on this isn't a Viper- go see the car and send me measurements

Thanks Vic, great contrast stitching in red, however, is it just me, or does the interior styling lack cohesiveness in real life (I still prefer 991 then 981 interior to this)?
'Dirty' is probably the word I would use. Reason enough to by one. Someone in an XFR tried to race me in the M5 at some traffic lights (before my 1200 service) and the exhaust noise way exceptional and in the videos the F-type sounds louder. Good on Jaguar for going this way with a stock exhaust. Last edited by Dionysus; 06-15-2014 at 11:28 AM.. |

I had limited seat time so I didn't get to really enjoy the functionality of the cabin but I would agree that the 991 is more aligned with the driver. If I go back for test drive 2 (which I will do if I am going to get it) then Ill delve deeper into the cabin along with a more intense drive hopefully involving true freeway runs with higher speed turns so I can truly appreciate the chassis. Ill say this, my first test drive in the 991 C4S was probably a 7 out of 10 because (my fault) I didn't push the car to its proper rpm ranges and the Jag is closer to a 8 or 8.5 and this, in no small part, was due to the sound. I may be in the minority but Id take a marginally slower car that has better sound.

I did mention a little about traction in my initial review at the top: the active diff really works well and I was not scared into feathering the throttle. Its not mash and go either like the RS7 but its rather easy for a rwd car to launch IMHO. Carlos Lago in the comparo vs the 991 ran it at 3.6 seconds and the quarter was in the high 11's (I forgot the exact time) at 122.XX mph. So the power is there and so is the grip from a launch. Its much easier to launch than my SL but the SL is tuned to 660 rwtq so the spin will happen.

Wow these are like exact M5 CP numbers -
Thanks bro, Well done Jag, Now that's super car for 50% discount and with almost super car numbers as these seem to have changed lately - it is really exotic ! I personally would take it over Porsche as it looks a lot more unique and exotic !! But that's me - |

haha... Soooma you are funny... always talk about that damn traction issue but I was concern about 3.6 sec too and how this light car cannot have traction issue when heavy M5/M6 have... in theory the heavier car with almost the same amount of power and torque must have better traction
