Anyone notice knocking sound on suspension???

Hello Guys...

This really unsettles me... but my M235 has a very noticeable knock specially on the rear of the suspension when going over speed bumps or uneven terrain that unsettles the car...

Have you guys noticed it? I know the m135i with adaptive suspension have this problem but I thought it would be sorted for the 2 series...

Thanks
JC

Mine hasn't made any noticeable sound. I guess what you're hearing could depend on the roads, I usually take speed bumps pretty slow.

This has been covered a fair amount on the 135i forums. Most of the time it's with adaptive suspension.

I've noticed it too. Kind of unsettling, but I have to assume it's normal/benign.

Well I thought you guys would be a bit more upset... For me it really screws up the solid feel of the car and find it unacceptable... You guys know if this could be fixed or not?

honestly.. i think its what comes with getting a sport feel car. If you think about it, the suspension on our M235i is stiffer (just like KWs) in order to give you that responsiveness. So when you try to stretch the springs when going over bumps, you're putting pressure and pulling (or compressing it). Its not like the springs are made like those slinky, its much harder so you'll hear something naturally.

This isn't BMW's first time making a sports car. I'm sure they are aware of the noise and would have already done something about it if it was an issue.

Well Im not saying that it could lead to a suspension failure, but IT IS an issue becuase this noises should not be present in a 50k car... I have driven other sports cars and they dont have this noise so its certainly bmw being lazy at fixing this issue which occurs since the M135i with adaptive suspension only...

Just started noticing this knocking sound (going over bumps) coming from rear suspension on my M235i Convertible. 4000kms.

Definitely thought there's something wrong initially.

I've heard the sound from the shocks since the delivery day, it's more of a bumping sound than a knock. It is most noticeable in Sport and Sport+ mode at low speeds on speed bumps and very uneven pavement. I don't think it is a defect but rather a design characteristic. I agree that it isn't ideal, but once you realize that the the car isn't "broken" it is easier to live with. I still love my M235i and every single friend that I've let drive my car falls in love with it too.

First six months I had zero noise. Now I always get a knock sound going up and down my driveway.

Just one theory that it might not be the suspension? I notice a loud thump going over speed bumps but I didn't recall noticing it the time I had a big bag of cat food in my trunk. I thought it was the trunk liner flap flopping up and down so I just normally shrug it off. My F30 made the same noise.

I'll try and throw something big and heavy in my trunk next time I go to work and see if it reacts the same way.

I took delivery of my 2015 M235ix in January and shortly after that, it developed a "thunk" sort of sound in the rear suspension... going over bumps, etc. In the end, the techs at my dealer found that it was a faulty shock tower mount. They replaced both sides and the thunk has been gone ever since.

It may be because of steering rack bolts also. Have you checked it? There have been numerous reports that these get loose. These are two in the cowl one is under battery and brake booster and other is underneath the car which sometimes become hard to get. You need to have good maneuvering skills, as you need to get the extension through some pretty harsh road .

I have noticed these noises on all of the cars I have driven. Below freezing temperatures accentuates the noises most often until the car warms up. Many times, it has been because of worn out bushings. On one vehicle, it was because the engine cradle was cracked due to an accident. On the second car I owned, a wheel bearing needed to be replaced. Based on the amount of metal machinery connected underneath cars these days, it is a miracle that most are absolutely silent in this regard. Twice, I took my car into the shop only to be told that the noise I was hearing as an item rattling around in a storage compartment or under the seat, opps! If these noises aren't affecting performance or driving pleasure, I would leave well enough alone before insisting that a technician start tearing out suspension parts and inspecting them for damage or failure.
