Water pump or sensor
I have a issue and not sure what to do. About 2 weeks ago i had a temperature sign come on the dash and the power shut down. I shut the car off waited 5 minutes and no more issues. Then a week later I took it to the dealership to get a oil change drove 800 miles with no problems and they didnt say anything while it was there now when I start my car the engine fan will come on and run immediately and loud but the car does not overheat and i haven't had a loss of power although I just drove it enough to get home. I read about it being a water pump but I also seen that it could be a cooling temp sensor. Has anyone had this problem or can give me some insight on what to do?

It is probably your waterpump. They are electric, and can fail intermittently. The fan coming on to full speed is typically a dead giveaway. If you have access to INPA, reading shadow codes would tell you definitively.

It's most likely your water pump beginning to die. Sometimes they begin losing voltage before they officially break which is probably whats going on in your case.
When the pump went out on my 08 535i there were no warning signs - it happened instantaneously. As Thomas said, if you have INPA you can test your voltage to the water pump to see if it is losing power.

Same issue replaced both and called a day. No issues since. Mine would intermittently over heat. I'd pullover and restart car and issue would go away until a few hundred miles later
