Carbon/Alcantara Interior Trim Installed

New trim kit arrived from Sun Motors this evening. Took me 25 minutes to install including gathering up the tools. Really goes well with the steering wheel.

Looks great, much better with the wheel as well. Just curious, do they make a shifter surround? That's all that left of your aluminum trim right?

Yep, that's what I saw someplace! I would definitely pick one of those up were I to go the carbon / alcantara route.

I was looking at that piece and the auto shift knob. Looks like the surround just lifts out, right? That looks like a do-it-yourself job, but the shift knob I have no idea how to install.

I can ask my service manager friend to check if you like. I think the e-brake takes some muscle but is doable, same for a standard knob but the auto version looks like it would be a bitch and possibly delicate w all the electronics. I assume if you break the stuff that stays and is reused with the new knob it could be a nightmare. Sun provided the instructions straight from BMW for my pedals, you could ask them too.

Looks good OP. Two Qs.
1. Anyone know if it's possible to order the alcantara piece above the glove box by itself?
2. BEM S-4, how difficult was the pedal install? Hearing about the need for drilling put me off.

It's not hard at all, just make sure you have the proper drill bits. I put the brake on, used it as a template and just drilled a tiny bit to get started then removed the cover and went to town. You are drilling pretty close to the edge of the metal part of the brake pedal so it's not hard but you need to be exact.

One thing they don't tell you, the back side of the brake pedal (the metal base that you drill into) is not flat, there's a lip and the lever or whatever it's called that it's attached to. When you tighten the bolts it's hard to get them super tight because the locking nuts will get tight to a point then you just spin them around. You can but it's difficult grip them with some needle nose pliers from behind. If you use a socket to hold the nut and then tighten with a screwdriver it's MUCH easier. One other thing after drilling there is a fair bit of sharp blowout stuff back there, clean it up with a low grit sanding pad. Do not rub your finger back there to see how bad it is like I did, you will then be cleaning blood off your new pedals.

The gas pedal is super easy you are drilling and screwing into plastic. One thing I would advise is that the directions call for 2.8mm bit, I got 3.0mm because it's all I could find. Go smaller 2.0mm if it's all you can get your hands on, you are just drilling into plastic and the screws will be a bit tighter. One of mine is a tiny bit loose but it doesn't matter the whole thing is held on with adhesive think the screws are superfluous at best.

BMW sells only the 5-piece kit, no separate pieces (yet). You may have some luck searching EBAY for an Asian made knock-off piece for just the dash. I'm looking at doing the shifter surround and carbon shifter too.

I did the M Performance pedals myself and it was as described. Use the supplied rubber backing as a template to make your pilot holes. Remove and drill out with the required size drill bit. I used a dremel grinder on the back of the pedal to smooth out the shavings (20 seconds per hole). I did small pilot holes for the gas pedal cover and they supplied screws are self-taping a bit and hold tight to the accelerator pedal. Note, the entire backing of the accelerator cover is double-sided tape to help keep it in place.

If you can get a copy of the install instructions for the gear shift knob that would be a big help. Looking at it again it appears the surround comes off first and then attaches to the boot. My guess is once the boot is off the connection for the shift knob will be exposed; maybe just some torx screws holding it in place.

** Found a picture of the shift knob parts, just covers and new button **

Took the good advice and installed the remaining two pieces; shfit knob trim and shifter surround trim. Ignore the white specs that still floating around from when I had the car dyno'd. Might take me several vacuums to get them all.

The issue with doing the shift knob cover is there is a T-8 Torx screw in the center under the shft pattern cover. It is a tight aluminum screw that taps into a plastic sleeve that is very tight. To do the job right you will need the correct size bit.

Passenger side trim cover has popped off at the top and won't stay seated any longer. Tried removing and re-installing with the same effect. Contacted Sun Motor Cars BMW for a replacement to see if that will fix it. Will update after part arrives.

There should be a L shape hook that you have to hook against the door handle first...then snap it the clips

Yep, the "L" shaped hook is at the bottom and is in place. I have re-installed this cover a second-time (removed it completely) with the same results. It snaps down on top then immediately pops back out. My guess is the piece has a slight bend that doesn't allow it to stay down, or the plastic molded clip on the top of the piece is not exactly formed right. Either way, I have a new piece coming to try soon.

The driver side is perfect with no gaps; hopefully this is just a bad piece on the passenger side.

New piece shipped on Tuesday and arrived today (Wednesday). Pulled original cover off and popped new piece on. Fits factory tight like it should. All's good in the world again, including my M235i interior.

Thumbs up for Sun Car Motors BMW and Brian

Interior looks great! My shifter and surround are arriving tomorrow was it the case that you remove the surround first to reveal a way to take off the shifter?
