Just search. This forum is loaded with opinions and this is a loaded question. Basically as long as it meets BMW specs (LL01) etc then it is good to use. Many use Mobil 1 0W40 because it is fairly cheap. I really like the so called "German" Castrol 0W30. Both these oils meet the specs and are readily available but there are numerous other options.

I was looking into alternatives just so many choices. If I'm going to be doing 5k mile oil intervals I'd like to save a few bucks though. I did OEM oil with my first change cause selection was a little overwhelming.

Since we are doing 5k mi intervals though as long as it's new oil that's probably all that matters.

I do 5k oil changes also. I use Mobil1 0w40. and usually buy the 5 qt container at WalMart for about $25. I buy Mann oil filters from Amazon for about $8. So. a DIY job costs about $45.

K yeah wal-mart always has unbeatable oil prices. This is what I was looking for, thx. Does the Mann filter come with the two o-rings from the oil filter housing and the copper crush washer for the drain plug or is that separate?

Any reason for the differentiating viscosity from OEM? Afaik my cars always used 5W-30. My understaning is the first number is viscosity cold and second number is hot. Does it feel better that you can tell? I'm in AZ and going up to 40 doesn't sound like a bad idea with how hot it gets here in the summer. 0 for cold im not too sure about.

It doesn't sound like you understand. Not any 5w-30 off the shelf will work (ideally). You want to make sure it is BMW LL-01 rated. There are choices, but normal Castrol 5-30 does not meet this standard.

Read the back of the bottle. This information is readily available here, do a search.

the 4 main choices are M1 0w-40, Castrol 5w-40, Castrol 0w-30 and BMW 5w-30. There are others, but you have to do your research and look harder for them.

I knew it had to be LL01. I assumed they had diff grades on tap. I see what you mean though. Thx.

You will be fine with the mobil1 0w40 all the time. The Mann filters come with the washer and o rings. As others have said only use LL01 oil which mobil10 w 40 is.

Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40

I've read nothing but praise for that oil... I will give it a shot on my next oil change.

Now that I will be moving to Florida soon, that oil weight is even better. Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 for me it is!

I usually use BMW oil, but on my last oil change I used 6 quarts of Royal Purple and 1 quart of Lucas pure synthetic oil stabilizer. I know RP isn't BMW approved but I doubt it really matters.

If you have one of these it will save you some time.

Do you notice any difference from using thicker oil? Less mpg, noticeable slower rev, etc?

Just remember it doesn't get the BMW LL-01 approval because BMW requires the oil to go for 12 or 15 thousand miles before changing, (forgot which one)
If your doing your own changes every 5000 or 3000 miles then any synthetic 5w30 is fine,

Thats why I do,
I do have some hookup's with BMW parts so most of the time I use dealer oil anyway but the times I don't then I use a good synthetic and leave it in around 3000 miles,

The only exception is my M, that gets the dealer 10w60 Castrol TWS and only ever has,
BMW are very specific with that engines oil
