Gas nozzle keeps prematurely shutting off
Hello guys. I'm having this annoying issue where when I'm pumping gas the nozzle keeps clicking off as if my tank is full, I pretty much have to keep pressing it down over and over again until my tank is full. Went to the dealer and they told my the charcoal filter went bad so they replaced it and I haven't had any problems until 3 months later it's starting to come back but not as bad. My warranty is up so I don't think they will help me out but I'll try to see if the dealer can repair it since it's reoccurring. Does anyone know or heard of this issue and what else can go wrong? Will if effect my car long term ? Thanks

I fill up at the same gas station about 2-3 times a week.
Pump 3 is my normal pump, but if it's being used, I go to pump 1. Pump 1 does the same thing you are describing. Pump 3 does not. It has something to do with the nozzle, probably not your car.

I have the same occurence, but only at Costco. It will always prematurely topoff, but if I go to Chevron or 76 or Shell, it will fill up normally.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone made the joke. I was holding off... ahem. So to speak.

It happens in many places with my 335i. Because we have full serve only, I get nervous when the attendant turns the nozzle upside down, it may fall out and hit the 1/4 panel.

I repair gas pumps and their components at gas stations. Usually the car is at fault for this type of thing happening not the gas dispenser handle. But broken handles do go overlooked, so tell the attendant at the convenient store if it keeps happening. No fully inserting the handle into the car sometimes helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Also NEVER TOP OFF YOUR GAS TANK.

Same thing happens to me. I live in SoCal as well. I think it either do to the amount of pressure in the tank (weather conditions etc), how the E9x gas tube is angled (part the gas cap goes onto. Can't think of the name) or how much our gas pumps get used since we live in CA and there's sooo many cars. I don't experience this problem at every pump but I'd say about 1/3 of the time I experience this problem. It's not just you OP

Pretty much every gas station I goto has the same problem. I always used to blame the pump but I fill up my e46 and my wife's Lexus and never have issues.
I'm taking it to the dealer. I heard of something called "tank rebreather valve" I notice whenever the nozzle shuts off it's because the tank it over filling. Once the fuel gets drained into the tank I can continue filling up but it's very annoying |

So does flipping the nozzle upside down help people? For me it's an issue of the fuel slowly draining into the tank so no matter what position I try it still clicks off

Possibly your refueling vent hose seen in item 16, is blocked or kinked.

When I first got my car, I went to a Shell right after and filled up with no problems. My second tank of gas came from Mobil and for whatever reason, the nozzle kept kicking as if it was full. Never had that issue anywhere else, so it's most likely just the nozzle.

Yeah, makes no sense why this would cause a problem. I might not top it off right to the filler hole, but the downtube is mostly full... Never had a problem.

Huuuge no no, if you study your evap system, you will see that when you top you tank off there is a chance that you send gas into your charcoal canister, which kills the canister and its not a cheap piece, plus if you get gas in there, it literally gets thrown right out of the car onto the floor....

When the pump switches of, im done filling up. No if, ands, or buts! I take the nozzle out, 2 taps on the filler neck so that i get the last drop to in the tank rather than on my quarter panel, then i hang the nozzle and get some candy from the gas station... or a redbull

This for me since Costco is typically up to 10 cents cheaper per gallon than anything close. But I never have problems at the same Costco with my 2010 F-150 nor when I had my E46.
