Checking maintenance history from VIN (some special tool?)
i was on the phone with some guy up north of me who had a silver 328xi coupe for sale. decent car but he mentioned something very interesting to me...
he said a customer came to him a while ago looking at one of his cars (he's a collector who sells some stuff on the side), and came in the door with the full maintenance history of the car, both from BMW dealers and from ASC (or maybe it was AEC?) certified mechanics. the customer said it was from some special tool or website and showed it to the guy. he has since misplaced the name of this website (he wrote it down, somewhere) does this exist? where is it? this could be the best tool for buying a used bmw ever made. especially if it includes scans of the maintenance reports, or at least digitized copies, so you know what was replaced and what problems the customer complained about. |

I don't think theres any 3rd party site that can access BMW's internal history.
Its hard enough just to get them to give you a print out

Unlimited Reports on Carfax is $55 annually if you're a consumer. Never used autocheck. But my carfax showed brake services as well as state inspections when I purchased the car. It even showed the new tires and rear brakes the dealer had installed. I think it has a lot to do with where the vehicle is serviced. I know for a fact that every service we do at my indy shop is on a vehicle's carfax. Our point of sale system is designed around it. I'd imagine smaller mom n pop shops probably wouldn't have such a system. But they could.

Depends on the dealer and what they report.
CarFax will not show everything. I got a detailed printout of the service history of my car from the dealer from the day the car was put into service. They are not supposed to give you anything that was done before you owned the car. but I guess it depends on how well you know and how well your SA like you.

When I bought my used 335i I asked the dealer for the service history, and they gave it to me right away. But then again that dealer is consistently ranked top 10 in the US for customer service among BMW dealerships.
