6MT folks

So do any of you guys go into 6th gear under normal driving conditions on the highway? At what RPM do you shift gears?

Of course not. 6th gear is only there because the shifter looks cooler with 6 gears instead of 5. I never even shift past 3rd and rarely shift past 2nd.

Make sure you at least hit the red line every time before you even think about shifting, son!

You guys are funny. But my question still remains. While driving on the highway under normal conditions and following the speed limit (60MPH) do you ever go into 6th gear or need to? I only ask because this is my first vehicle with a 6spd MT

Instead of shifting into 6th, try going from 5th to "Race" - that's the gear labelled "R"

Yes I do. I'm usually in 6th gear anything past 50mph.

Yes... As standard.. when not driving spirited, be in the gear that your speed is... 20=2, 30=3, 40=4, and so on. at 60 or above, switch to 6th....

You generally want to be in the higher gear to also save on gas.

Yeah, every time. I shift around 3.2k ish so that the next gear is 2k.

I'm still learning the ratios, but I'm getting better. The E46 was ultra easy:

10-20mph: 1st, shift at 3k -> 20-30mph: 2nd down to 2k, shift at 3k -> 30-40mph: 3rd down to 2k, shift at 3k, etc.

If it's flat and a no-hurry 55mph+ I'm in sixth. If it's anything less than that I'm in 5th to pass if I need.

I even use 6th on 40mph roads. The motor has plenty of torque to handle it. Absolutely on the highway, hills or not.

Yes, all kidding aside I am often in 6th if driving a steady 50 MPH on a flat road. The watch our for lugging the engine, tryng to make it do too much in too loaw a gear. If I was in 6th at 50MPH and approaching an uphill section I would most likely down shift to 5th, and maybe 4th, even if not trying to accelerate. But on the highway at 60MPH there is little reason to downshift to from 6th to 5th unless you really want to accelerate quickly - maybe to make a quick pass before faster traffic runs you over from behind.

Yes, all the time. Like others said, I usually shift into 6th at around 60mph under normal driving.

The N54/N55 engine has so much low end torque that you can be in 6th gear at 45/50mph and still be able to pick up speed without having to downshift... In a way, it drives like a fat lazy V8

Not many 6 cylinder cars can do this in 6th gear...

Hardly ever use sixth unless on long highway trip. On short interstate stints, 5 miles or less I leave in 4th.

Yes. Under normal driving conditions. RPM slightly under 2K in 6th at 60MPH. Confirmed while stuck behind someone in the left lane....
