Fuel restrictor

I've had enough with that fuel restrictor and having to use the adapter. Has anyone removed the fuel restrictor from the car?

Really good question. I've noticed the same thing, filling up at most stations the appropriate size nozzle just barely fits in the tank and some stations I've gone to have the larger size nozzle which forced me to just drive away since I don't feel like making a mess all over my hands using that adapter.

never had that problem yet but hopefully I will never have one as I don't even have the adapter since i bough the vehicle used and it was not there, but for sure it would be good to know if this can be removed.

I've had to use the adaptor twice in 4 years. Even CENEX and Pilot stations have the correct nozzles. Canada must be a backwards country.

I used the adapter once. It was in a little town in Louisiana. What was weird was the diesel in LA is dyed green. At first i was concerned in might be a farm only thing and was mistakenly in the "on road" diesel pump. Nope, in LA all diesel has green dye.

In Texas, farm only (no road taxes assessed) is red and "on road" diesel is clear.

Sounds like someone at the Jetta TDI forum solved this problem. Don't know if their technique will work with BMW, but I am guess that the diesel filler necks are similar, if not exactly the same mechanism. This design might be from the same sub-contractor.

Not sure that this will work on our diesels. I had an 00' Jetta TDI and performed the "ventectomy" and it is just that a little spring loaded button on the side of the filler that will allow air out and more fuel to be put in. The restrictor we have is a totally different beast....

Have never needed to use it for fill-up, well, once in 70 fill-ups. Used to use it put in additives, but some smart forum guys indicated that it wasn't really needed for that either. I really try to avoid the 18-wheeler nozzles because of the flow rate.

I've done about 160 fill ups. Never once used it, nor do I even have one. I just use pumps that have the right nozzles. If I find one that doesn't, I just go to the next station.

I would be concerned that if you remove the restrictor will your cap still work?

I admit I would be skittish about removing this mechanism. I don't want to increase the chances of someone mis-fueling the vehicle. There are states in the USA (Oregon for one) where you cannot fuel your own vehicle. It wouldn't take much (a friend, one's spouse, a service station attendant, myself on a bad day) to put petrol in the tank.

Embarrassingly I admit to having done that once with a diesel rental in Italy, although in my defense the language and different color of nozzles contributed to my screw-up. Fortunately I caught it rather quickly.

I believe that Diesel is exempt from the Full service only states. It only applies to Gasoline.
I have found the restrictor to be an issue at several Fuel stations, not because they are the wrong size, but because the ends of the nozzles are dented in for some reason. Ive found that rotating the nozzle 45 degrees usually helps because the sides of the nozzle (3 o' clock and 9 o' clock) aren't dented like the 12 o' clock tip is and this helps release the mis fuel device. Ive only come across 1 fuel station where I couldn't fuel up. I've had several diesels so i'm not concerned about putting the wrong fuel in and most my friends and family run diesels as well.

Thanks for the info. I'm moving to Oregon in about a month; I was aware of the gasoline issue, and had assumed that included diesel. I read that some stations will insist on pumping your diesel too. I guess I'll have to sort that out at the station on a case-by-case basis.

Apparently NJ is the other state.

Just got mine in mail yesterday, just incase.

I've had problems sometimes installing the diesel nozzle from certain pumps that are over used.

Diesel is a Class II liquid, gasoline Class I. OR prohibits customers pumping Class I liquids. I suspect that, if the diesel pump is at the gas pumps the attendant will want to pump it.

I've had to use the adapter a few times. It's only been when I'm coming back late from out of town and I'm forced to stop because I'm low on fuel; unfortunately they have all been truck stops. I keep a hand towel in my trunk just for these inconvenience's.
