It's a release in case you get locked in the trunk. If you ever plan on abducting someone clip that shit off.

Federally mandated for some 10 years now. Glows in the dark so you can see it when the trunk is closed (never tried it though). It is an attempt to provide childern a way to escape if they lock themselves in the trunk. It is a very good idea to teach your childern about this feature; perhaps even practice it.

The Mafia lobby tried to not have the legislation passed however.

If you ever plan on kidnapping someone in the trunk of your car, make sure you cut it first.

I thought it was to tie up the hooker. Why would you want her to escape? You have her for the night.

I am surprised that government never mandated it for refrigerators back in the day since many kids died in old time Refrigs when people stop using them as a refrig. They because a great hide and seek place for kids to hid in. Not sure how many kids died in trunks of cars, since they not sealed, but lots of kids died in Refrigs. You were just required to remove the door if you junk the Refrig

You know they should also put these in school lockers not sure how many time kids get locked in those. I know my friends lock my GF at the time in my locker by convincing her she could not fit in it.

The government is now mandating back up camera and sensor for all cars sold in the US starting in 2016 due to too many parents running over their 2 or 3 yr old they let play in the driveway while they attempt back out.
