My new tint scratched, anyone else's too?
Just got my car tinted and upon lowering the windows for the first time, the tint scratched.
Now I cleaned the trim and windows before tinting and made sure no dirt was trapped by gaskets. Anyone else's got scratched as well? I have 2011 e90. I noticed there is a secondary gasket lower but it cannot be reached to clean. I guess I will have to pop door panel to clean it... Please share your experience. |

I'm thinking of removing the door panels and either cut or remove the secondary gasket that scratches the tint. I'm using llumar tint. |

It's the dirt thats trapped on the secondary gasket that is doing the scratches. I see it all the time on the BMW's. The solution is to get a moleskin which last a few years or do what my tint shop recommended and cut the secondary gasket.

You simply cannot tint your E9x without it- it is critical. |

It's funny that you say that because I noticed scratches on my driver's side window after I got mine done a couple of weeks ago. It's Llumar too. Weird thing is it's now gone and I have no idea how. I could even run my finger over the scratches and feel that it was def scratched and not a streak of some sort. Maybe just give it a little bit and clean your window good and see if this "scratch" goes away.

Yes. This.
It's well documented all over the place. Should definitely do research before installing anything on these cars even something as simple as tint. OP, Look up tint protector. Custom moleskin to protect. |

Thanks guys for your help. I ordered moleskin.
From the guides on moleskin installation, it looks like they install it on the first upper weather strip/grommet. I thought it was the lower one that scratched the tint? Also, some people don't take off the panel but rather pop the top portion. For those who installed moleskin, did you need to pop the whole door panel or just the top? Thanks for all your help. |

I recently removed my tint that was ruined by the secondly gasket, my tint looked as though I had my car full of stray cats clawing to get out! Before getting my new tint I pulled the top of my door panel open ( was very easy to do) pulled the window seal-gasket out and cut off the secondary seal with a razor blade. I'm sure bmw put it there for a reason but I have not noticed any extra road noise or other negative result from doing so.

everyone on this board with tinted windows most likely has the vertical scratches.
You need to wrap the window rails internally with some type of tint protector. Even if there is no "dirt" between the rail and window, even the slightest, smallest nick against the rail will scratch your tint... your car is probably not perfectly level or straight when you put your windows up/down.. so just that alone causes the window to hit the rail ever so slightly and leave scratches.

my passenger side window is scratched. I have no idea how it happened. At first I thought it was white shit stuck to the outside. I am going to have the window redone at some point.

I've had 20% on all my previous vehicles and throughout all of that time I received two tint tickets. One of which was because I had the original reason for being pulled over lowered to a tint ticket instead of a few over the speed limit. $54 including internet payment fee.
In NJ, depending on exact location, they really don't bother you much unless they're completely blacked out. OP, i've been kind of waiting on installing tint on this car since I've read alot about the tint being scratched by the felt/plastic strip. Moleskin should eliminate this issue, so make sure you install this before having the tint re-done! Moleskin DIY- http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=711764
