AS vs Summers
Guys,
Like an idiot, I got AS tires, as I intended/intend to get a set of 19s with performance tires. The AS are 225 on all four tires. I understand the summers are staggered. Can I throw a set of staggered performance tires on the existing set of stock rims?

What are the wheel sizes? If you go to tirerack.com, they will show what rim width ranges go with each tire size. Don't stagger too much or you'll get understeer. Having 4 equal wheels and tires is good for being able to completely rotate the tires (unless directional tires, but then you can still rotate front to rear).

Thx man. Much appreciated.
If only we could see some more aftermarket rim options...

I looked at the specs on the BMW site and am kind of unclear....they call out for the summer tires 225/245 like the 135 had but the wheels they say are 7.5in on all four corners. Can that be right? Somewhere I read that they were 7.5in et45 front and 8in et52 rear

My car came with a/s too but I don't think you can get staggered tires because our rims are 7.5" and the rear tires minimum rim size is 8" but not sure. It would be nice to know if we can get staggered as I don't want to buy new rims.

Going off the ordering guide from December, the 436M wheels on the M235i are 7.5" wide, front and rear. With order code 2PG (Michelin PSS), you get 225 tires in front and 245 in the rear. With order code 2TR (all-season RFT), you get 225 tires all around. Also with code 2TR, according to the ordering guide you have the reduced top speed limit of 130.
On the 228i, with order code 2PU (summer RFT) you get 461M wheels 7.5" front with 225 tires, 8" rear with 245 tires. With order code 2TS (all-season RFT) you get 461M wheels 7.5" with 225 tires all around. |

Low profile tires are especially intolerant of using rims that are too narrow.

Thanks, that is what is confusing about the order guide because it says that the rims on the M235i are 18 x 7.5 but the staggered summer rears rims must me 8" if they have the bigger tires.

I would guess they're 8.5" or 9", but at least 8". Range is 8-9.5" for that size and 9" or 9.5" would be my preference if I was shopping for rims.

Once Tire Rack has the 235M on their web site I can almost guarantee they will have the correct size listed. My original post was based on information I read here. There is one way to tell for sure, all BMW rims are tagged with the size on the inside.

I just looked it up again and this is what I see online for performance summer specs:
Front 7.5 J x 18 light alloy 225/40 rear 8 J x 18 light alloy 245/35 Last edited by horsepower_and_hounds; 04-27-2014 at 06:26 AM.. |

So wait: can I or can I not get the Michelin Summer's for my existing set up?
In other words, do cars with AS tires have smaller rims than those with performance tires?

Sounds like its uncertain at this point, I'm going to find out. When I used a tape measure earlier today it appeared they were the same size. I'll take off one of my rear tires tomorrow and find out for sure.

Agreed...AS look like they are square and summer are staggered. Now the question is the rim selection....both fronts I am sure are 7.5 but are the backs 7.5 or 8? Hmmmmmm...

It would be nice if we had someone who has the summer tires measure their rear rims to see the size, so we can compare. I can also take mine off today and measure if I get a chance. I want to order summer tires as I live in Florida but don't want to order the staggered if they won't fit the rear rims.

I just did a quick measure, with the wheels on, from the inside lip of the rim to the outside. There definitely appears to be 1/2" difference on mine (I have the Summer option). I think what you found is spot on.

There's a thread somewhere by a member who swapped out his 235 rims and did some other mods. He shows a pic of the front and rear rims on a scale (along with the weight of the lighter replacement rims). If I recall, the weight of the front and rear rims differed slightly, indicating they are slightly different-sized.
