DIY: M Performance rear diffuser

Hi Gents,

Just another DIY for those looking to tackle a easy job. First if you plan on replacing the diffuser; make sure you chose if either you have M-Performance Exhaust. If you do not, chose the standard exhaust and you will need to get the adapters to extend the tips!

I am installing Performance exhaust tomorrow; so you will see why you will need the adapters if you do not have M Performance exhaust.

----
Tools needed:
  • 8mm socket with extension
  • Flathead screw driver or expanding rivet clip remover
  • Patiences
----
Difficulty 1-5 (5 being hardest): 2

----

Start by painting, or leaving your diffuser primed. I chose to paint my diffuser and than keep the center gloss black.

You can do this on the ground with no hoists if you have not lowered your car yet. Go underneath the vehicle and removing the six 8mm bolts. They have speed nuts on the exhaust shield.

Remove the expanding pin on both sides of the diffuser. They are right behind the 8mm. You will use a flat head screw driver here to pull these out.

Start by slowly pulling way on a corner you will hear the clips start to come loose from the bumper.

Installing the new bumper was a little tricky with the clips. They are extremely tight and require A LOT of force. I'm not exaggerating when I say a lot. I had to put all of my 180LBS into each clip right underneath with WD40 on top of the clip. Do not be surprised if you have to spend upwards of a minute pushing on some of the center clips. This photo shows the clips not all the way in.

Here is a photo after really pressing on the diffuser to get those clips in. Was rather painful!

Overall, how do you feel about the appearance? Do you feel it's aggressive enough? I haven't been able to make up my mind on the M Perf diffuser based on pics.

To be honest, I need to get the M Performance exhaust on to be sure. I do believe it makes the rear quite more aggressive. Something this car absolutely needs due to the plain rear end. The fins are VERY pronounced. I really do like that.

Makes sense. Definitely think the exhaust will complete the look. But glad to hear the diffuser's features are pretty pronounced! That's what I was most curious about.

Also painting it gloss black really made them pop. The fins are 3 inches out from the base in terms of height

I understand what you want to achieve, and the first photo looks great....well lit, looking up from below. The concern for me would be that one never sees it in that lighting or angle on the road. The second to last photo is much more representative, and unfortunately, the surface detail of the fins in black pretty much disappears.

I went through a similar exercise on another brand of vehicle not too long ago, and wound up painting the entire diffuser, just so I could see that I really had a diffuser there. Going from the original black CF to bodycolor made a huge difference.

Me. Didn't want MPE. Eventually will go aftermarket for exhaust but wanted better looking tips in the meantime.

That looks good. What exactly am I looking at though? Have you used the adapters and added aftermarket tips? Which tips exactly?

M Perf tips and adapters. Note that u have to cut ~120mm off of the end of each exhaust pipe in order to fit the adapters. Not a big deal...just FYI.
