manual transmission noise

can everyone chime in their experience with the tranny? mines pretty notchy and doesn't go into gear totally smooth, but that can be normal. also is it normal for the tranny to make a lot of noise when shifting?

My 235 won't be in until May, won't know for sure until then. I have many praises on the manual here.

BMW manuals are all notchy. From my 99 M3 to the 135i its notchy. You get used to it.
In the 135i I can hear the gear shifts with the radio off, parked and windows down. But when I am driving i never really notice it.

I know of 135 is notchy, and the worst is the 1st to 2nd feels rubbery and slight hesitation getting into 2nd. I hope this new one is not like that.

I have no issues with my tranny/shifter it is notchy in a good way. No noise that I know of and 1st to 2nd is no different than any other gear change (I couldn't say that about my Z4 M though).

Yes, it is notchy and a little rubber like. Easy decision to go with the automatic instead for me. I had been spoiled prior

The transmission is much better 1->2 than the Z4M, right?

How do you feel the cars compare in general? Considering the M235i but not sure it will feel raw / exciting enough. Is there a lot more body roll than in the Z4M?

I like the shifter better in the M235i, however comparing a car I bought brand new (M235i) to the Z4M with 20k miles isn't too fair. The M235i shifter feels a bit less rubbery, and very direct. I did not dislike the Z4M shifter, but like this one better.
I am still breaking in my new car so I cannot compare that accurately. The suspension in the Z4M was non adjustable (talking struts/shocks here) and with that in mind it seemed lower and also more stiff than the M235i, however again that is still an early impression. I like the M235i better for being more livable for every day, and still being able to dial it in and have the fun.

Thanks, for what it's worth, the shifter behavior didn't change on my Z4M from the day I drove it off the lot till I turned it in. I absolutely couldn't stand the 1->2 shift grinding and denial issues which are pretty common in those cars. I think other than that shift it was great.

Yeah, I have that, but attribute it to everything being cold, or rather not warm. If not getting on the gas in first I get a little hitch in acceleration until I'm up over 1.5k rpm too. This seems to not be a problem in sport mode though.

One thing I don't love is how the engine seems to stay at rpm for a sec when off the throttle during a shift. I've been trying to adjust by coming off the gas a just a bit earlier than I do in my N/A 4 cylinder in a shift. Not sure if this is due to engine inertia, throttle by wire, turbo, or what, but makes for longer pause for the rpms to fall before coming off the clutch.

Anyone else notice this? This is my first long term experience with a BMW...

I noticed this coming from an E36 M3. It took a bit to get adjusted but I was able to learn the 135i turbo or drive by wire slowness/difference fairly quickly.
But i do notice this rev hold in my Lotus Exige S as well and its supercharged but i am pretty sure its drive by cable.. So I am thinking it is due to the turbo causing the rpms to hang longer after taking your foot off the gas to shift.

Why wouldn't you want it notchy... I personally like the feedback. Always knowing exactly where the shifter is. I don't like it when a gear box feels like a cloud.

This is one of my favorite manual BMW's I have driven. Coming from a M3 and 335is six speed I feel this manual is less rubbery and has a nice short throw.

Mine feels great, took a few days to get accustomed to it after the M3. Prefer this gearbox on m235i
