You have an HDD if you have navigation.

no nav = no HDD.

IIRC the HD in my new "d" has 12GB available for music storage.

Music storage is via ripping CD's or copying from USB sticks only.

You can't store radio streams.

You can record Sirius on the hard drive--like a one hour buffer or something like that. Maybe because of my options, but it's in the manual.

Agreed:

Timeshift
Approx. one hour of the program being broad‐
cast on the channel currently being listened to
is stored in a buffer. Prerequisite: the signal must
be available.
The stored audio track can be played with a de‐
lay following the live broadcast. When the buffer
is full, the older tracks are overwritten. The buf‐
fer is cleared when a new channel is selected.

I don't consider this really "storing" Sirius to the HDD; it's just a delay buffer.

It's not like you can create a catalog of recorded Sirius media that is stored on the HDD like you can by ripping a CD or copying a USB stick of audio.

True. Like a TiVo buffer that goes away when you switch channels. I think the CD ripping would be useless since they're .wmv files and you can't copy them to anything else IIRC.

The hdd is 80gb generally with 12gb set aside for music storage. I've always wondered if that could be upgraded to a larger hdd?

The HDD in the CIC has a PATA interface which you really can't find anymore.

The 80GB HDD is a special model built explicitly for use in cars. It's the largest one they make with a PATA interface.

I think the NBT HDD is SATA, so there may be more options there.

Rather than storing your music on the HDD, just use a big USB stick. You have access to much larger storage and they are easily swapped.

Or just stream from your phone.

+1 USB drives are ridiculously cheap for the amount of space. I just got a Kingston with 128GB capacity, and it's smaller than most older 1GB drives.

I like the SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33.

http://www.sandisk.com/products/usb/drives/cruzer-fit/

They are the size of a thumbnail and available in sizes up to 64GB.

MY2014+ cars with Nav use a 200GB hard drive with 20GB of music storage, as opposed to the aforementioned 80GB hard drive with 12.5GB of storage.

Non-nav iDrive cars still use a hard drive, there's just no ability to store music as it clearly has much less capacity.
