Engine oil

Hi guys,

Quick question I've a 2005 e90 330i N52 and want to know what oil is best in terms of thickness.

I don't have the manual for the car and i've looked about but unsure if 5W 40 or 5W 30 is correct....perhaps both are correct but is there a better option of the two?

Many thanks.

You need either 5w30 or 0w30.

I personally use Mobil 1 0w30.

I use German Castrol 0w30 in my 2010 E92, and have used it in my past couple of cars as well.

Hi Telli, I personally wouldn't buy the mobil super 3000 (does it cover specs ll-04 or ll-01 at all? ) .
instead, as discussed above, better go for the mobil 1 esp or the castrol edge fst
as manual says, you have to top up only when the electronic oil level is at minimum point. then and only then, you add only 1 lt (at least for the n46 engines) ! but you can always flush it and change it completely (which is better if you ask me)

cheers terryk, I checked their website and in fairness Mobil is a decent brand, so 5w-30 should be fine. i have cover 63k, and about to go on a long journey, and each time i have started a long journey ( over 200 miles) about 20 miles in i get the warning for a 1lt of oil. so i have topped up this time of just under a litre and let the engine idle for a few minutes to make sure no smoke etc but it has been about 3k since i last put oil in. i know that too much oil is just as bad as too little, so didn't put too much in…..

From Mobil's site:

Quote:
Mobil Super 3000 X1 Formula FE 5W-30 is intended primarily to meet the requirements of Ford but is also suitable for use in other vehicles where the viscosity and quality claims are appropriate.

That oil is designed for Ford engines and doesn't meet BMW specs, so personally I wouldn't run it in your N52. You should be looking for an oil that meets BMW LL-01 or LL-04. Opie Oils sell a number of suitable products for a decent price...
