Oil Dipstick???

Is there really a dipstick to check oil on an M235i???

Important features in the engine compartment

1 Jump-starting, negative terminal
2 Vehicle identification number
3 Washer fluid reservoir
4 Jump-starting, positive terminal
5 Engine compartment fuse box
6 Dipstick for engine oil
7 Oil filler neck
8 Coolant reservoir

Anyone who has taken delivery could you confirm? This would be a nice return if it does. The electronic level checking is a pain.

Not sure if it matters but in the pic you have the engine is a 4 cylinder most likely the n20 whereas the m235 is the In line 6 so maybe the n20 has a dipstick? As far as I know my m235 does not have one

There's no dipstick in my M235i, you have to check the oil electronically. I'm not sure where that pic is from, the one in my M235 manual looks different.

That was from the owners manual i found here http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=963815
Figured its usually one manual that covers all the cars in a series.
Bummer there isn't a dip stick for the oil. It stupid not having one being a car that is supposed to be race type car. There are some things that should not be automated. Or at least give the option.

Yeah, I believe this started with the N54 and has carried over for all versions of the N55 - there is a little menu you have to find on the instrument cluster that tells you if you're in the acceptable "range" of oil level.

I will take a pic of my engine bay at lunch so everyone can see it - I love doing that shit in my work parking lot - people think I am f*cking nuts.

Yea its been this way since my 08 135i. I have gotten used to it as the car is always under warranty and i just let the dealer deal with changing the oil. I have another car that has a dipstick so i can still have some manual fun.

Without the dip-stick, how much oil that I have to fill if the engine-oil light comes off?
Coming from a GTI, it burns a litre of oil every couple months. How much oil does it burn for 135 or 335?

The onboard CPU tells you if you are a quart or 1/2 a quart low...

I would say that my 135s "used", on average, a quart of oil every service interval (15K miles).

Yea I never got any warning light of low oil in the 135i and its changed either every 10k miles or once a year. Mine was usually once a year as I only put about 10K a year on my car. Unfortunately or fortunately its not like the old days where you checked it every few months. Cars have gotten better over the years at using the oil more efficiently. Less waste. You will get used to it. Just the nature of technology growth.

Strangely, I never got it on the N54, but got it twice on the N55 (the computer warning me that I was low on oil). With the N55 it was always around that 13.5 - 14K mile marker since the last service interval - all the BMWs I have had had the 15K mile service intervals.

The M235 is 10 though, I believe....

And yes, with synthetic oil and more efficient engines, I think you're right - they're just able to run better for longer periods of time, making the "checking" less frequent and easily accomplished by the computer.

EDIT - here is the pic of the M235 engine bay

Found the engine shown in the manual:

This is on a 118i (N13 engine), and is a 1.6L turbo. As far as I can tell, the 2 series will not be offered with this engine, so who knows what the manual is talking about.

How much oil is in my 228i

BMW is really being a pain in the ass. I hate that it has no dip stick and now the owners manual will not even tell me how much oil goes into it on an oil change. Does anyone know where I can find out? I may have to call the dealer.

This is one of the things I do not like about my new car. The other is the run flat tires and no spare or no donut. I traded them out within the first 40 miles and added a donut kit.

The other thing I dislike is how complicated it is to work on. My mechanic who did great on my 2005 325i said I should get the extended warranty because it is too much for him to deal with.

What do I like. Everything else! It drives like a dream!

7 quarts, per another forum member's post in another thread who did their own oil change.
