Ticking and New Cylinder Head Count

Just trying to get an idea of the number of owners who have had the cylinder head replaced because of the ticking, and have you had any problems since.

What is causing your heads to tick?

In my E36, it was due to oil starvation, or too low of an oil level.

Cylinder head replaced due to ticking and occasional blue smoke. New cylinder head is now ticking - even louder than before. LOL

i had the ticking noise too. The dealer said it was because the car had not been moved in a while. They changed the cylinder head. Now i had it for about 2k miles. Noise gone.

I have the ticking noise as well. Nothing's been replaced. The sound goes away after the engine warms up though.

My car has loud ticking, but I think nothing of it....thought it was valve lifters or something
along those lines...I have a pretty rough idle for an I-6 car 2. Does not change rpm's at all, but just car has 2 much vibration from her (the engine).

I have the ticking, and it was noticed in the shop on my first major service last week at 15k mi. The service manager took it back in this week...said they would do the bleed but it only works in 10-15% of cases he said. It didn't work and they are ordering new cylinder head with the different oil drainage system that is the cause of the mess, causing oil starvation up on top at the valves, and which he said is costing BMW a fortune in replaced cylinder heads.

The cylinder heads are on back order with at least 3 week delay.

My car ticks now and then... when cold or if driven with very low revs for long time. They told me at bmw service to keep the revs at 2000rpm untill it goes away. If i do this it will go away, or if i drive the car and rev it up a couple of times. Wonder if my head should be changed. Do you think my cams and lifters will wear out because of this?

Does anyone have the service receipt or invoice after replacing their cylinder head because of the ticking noise?
My dealer says it is normal for the BMW to have ticking noises…

My SA told me that BMW has rescinded the method of cylinder replacement to fix the problem. But I wouldn't take his word for it, I'm going to contact BMW corporate and see what they have to say.

3-Series Ticking Sounds

My cylinder head has now been replaced and the car's running fine with no ticking noise. The New Mexico dealer's service advisor said he has had more than 20 of them done alone...not counting the guys down the hall. So some of you guys' dealers have some integrity problems sounds like.

My invoice dated 2/25/09 states this: "Customer states there is ticking noise on startup SOPS IN
Replaced cylinder head as per Puma Case #21862855 on R.O. 136942."

All listed under warranty and no charge.

Hope this helps. Heck...its warranty work...you'd think the dealers would be all over this.
