Deal got weird - should I be perturbed?
Went to my local dealer to trade in my E93 M3 for a M235i - they did not have the configuration I wanted in stock but they were able to locate my second color choice EB at a nearby dealership - we struck a deal and I gave them my CC for a deposit to get the car moving (Friday 11am ish)
Here is where things got a little weird - Friday 5pm I get a call from the dealership saying we can get the car tomorrow (saturday) but wanted to let you know its gone thru two dealerships and will have like 300 miles on it by time it gets here - we have your first color coming if you want to wait 2-3 weeks. I said ok no prob just move forward with the deal we have already struck. Today (Saturday ) I do not hear from dealership - I call at 3 and get a pretty prompt callback - they say that the other dealership was unwilling to swap the car today because "they wanted to show it more", I asked if this meant they could sell it and they assured me not. Thinking about more and more people pawing up what I thought was going to be my car I inquired about waiting two weeks for the brand new gray one and they indicated this was still an option and we all agreed to follow up Monday morning. The part I am a little peeved on is that they allowed this other dealership to continue to show (and I'm sure test drive) the car once I had committed to buy it, I think they should have taken care of it Friday and had the car for me today.. any thoughts on this? Am I being unreasonable? |

Feel your pain on this. Really don't think your dealership can really dictate how the other dealerships do business. They do have a cooperative agreement between each other I'm sure, but given how new this car is and how some dealerships don't get the same allocation it was probably to hard for them to give the car up.
Deciding to walk away from the first deal was probably a good move on your part. Might even help when you go to sign the deal on your car when it finally arrives know you are willing to walk away if not happy or feel put out. PM me the dealership you are working with (I have worked with a few in NO. VA) and I will see if I can shed some light offline. |

That is how I'd handle it, it sounds like your dealership is a joke in customer service to tell you a sold car is being driven around and to hold on. Could you imagine ordering an M4 or an M2 and being told hey hold we need some more people to test drive this a bit and get on it. You'll get a call from us in a few days when we're ready to sell it to you. I'd instantly lose it. Don't be afraid to impose some standards of the deal they aren't going to take the car away from you, you're paying a lot of money and make sure your expectations are met and they aren't jerking you around. I'd absolutely wait for the grey one in two weeks. While you're waiting call a few other local dealers assuming there are a few around. Just tell them you need this car with these options within two weeks and they need to beat your current deal. Worst case scenario you get the car from current dealer in 2 weeks. Best case someone else earns your business and saves you some money.

Just to give you a point of reference from the opposite end of the spectrum, I won't be in town when my car arrives and my dealer has agreed to prep the car and deliver it to my garage to eliminate my OCD craziness that someone will breathe on it wrong or god forbid drive it.

MHO...Wait for the other one. I worked in a dealership already and inspected dealer trades. The longer and more miles on it the more you do NOT want it.

I know these cars are new, rare and you want to get your hands on one. However, I would be weary of the miles since its 300 miles of it being beat on pretty much since its a demo car. That's pretty much 300 miles of hard drive and who knows if those test driving knew about the car being warmed up? They could have just redlined it out of the lot and I wouldn't want a car like that; especially when paying that much money.

I was a salesman at one time awhile back. Sounds like this has been demo'd a bit and they're trying to justify the number of miles that will be on it. When I car is tagged as a "swap/locate" the dealership should mark it up and effectively the car is "sold" meaning that it can't be test driven. If I were you, I'd pass on this and wait for the original car you wanted.

Let's put it this way. If I had a chance to test drive one I would abuse the hell out of it to see what it can do. I would only be allowed 5 or 10 miles by the dealer to do this. So 30 people have test driven this car and abused the crap out of it.
No thanks I would pass. If it was only 30 or 40 miles an argument could be made, but 300? You should be paying used car price at this point since it's basically a used car that has never been titled. Pass and demand one with little to no usage. Who cares if it takes a few weeks. Last edited by five3three; 03-22-2014 at 08:31 PM.. |

I hope I read your post correctly....you only have to wait 2-3 wks for your first choice? And brand new? A happy wait indeed. My guess is your dealer got your hopes for an immediate car--and the other dealer just did not wish to play along due to needing a demo on sight. Enjoy the wait--it will be sweeter when it comes in.

I agree with the general sentiment here - the existing car sounds like it has already been put through the paces already.
I would definitely wait on the new one - you still have your E92 M3 - not a hard thing to live with for a couple of weeks. That's a hell of a car no matter what. Additionally, you aren't doing them a favor by buying anything. Remember that - and you deserve to get what you want. You aren't buying a toaster - you're buying a car that's going to be pushing 50 grand.

You can get your deposit back 100% they don't even have a specific car for you. I've ordered cars had them show up and changed my mind before. As long as you didn't order some ridiculous custom bullshit like pink interior even if it's ordered just for you, as long as they can sell the car, any dealer worth dealing with won't care. Worst case dispute the charge and let Amex or whoever deal with it for you. If you decide to shop elsewhere.

Yeah stuff that! I got 10% off list price on a brand new one. Dealer has emailed me a video of it arriving still in all it's interior wrapping. No way would I be taking a demo car for anywhere near list.
You'll be able to just move your deposit to the new one I'm sure. It won't be your dealer that's the problem it'll be the one that's effectively losing a sale by giving your dealer their car |

Sounds like a demo that I would def skip out on, especially if you're purchasing it over leasing it.

I don't know how BMW does it, but I know on dealer trades here at Ford the salesman brings the car from the dealership to his. With 300 plus miles that's way too many in my mind for a 235i. Even customers here at Ford complain when their base fiesta has over 40 on it. lolz. Pass and just wait for the grey car.

Tell them to stuff it. Serious breach of professional ethics and selling. The car has no doubt been ragged from cold for 300+ miles by different people who will not respect it; I've seen it done at my local stealership.
Buggered if I would accept it without at least a 20% discount and even then I wouldn't be sure. Hold out for a brand spanky new one and walk away from that stealership too! |
