DIY for interior trim (aluminum to CF) - 3 Parts

Interior Trim DIY Part 1 - Door Trim

guys,

finally got my interior trim from BavDom today. great weave !!! great quality !!! some fitment issues with the console and ashtray but nothing major...

i found 10 minutes today to do the door trims. will finish up the dash and console trim later.

the doors are relatively easy. i followed the instructions posted here but took step-by-step pictures (seems like everyone got carried away and forgot to take pics).

for the dash, i've already seen a good DIY here so i'll only post pics of those if requested.

tools:
1. phillips screwdriver (smaller and thinner is better)
2. pair of pliers (to remove the screws from the trim).
3. old calling cards (or people who you don't want to call anymore). i used the packing of the screwdriver.

steps:

1. insert the buffer material (credit card, calling card, etc) between the trim and the door. make sure to start from the inner (hinge) side of the trim since there are clips on outer side. twist the screwdriver to create a gap and free up the first screw/tab.

2. pull the trim straight out section by section (for the front trim, there are 6 screws and for the rear trim, 3).

rear trim

3. remove the bolts and place in your new trim.

4. attach your new trim outer side first and making sure you fit the clip at the end.

5. enjoy your new interior trim !!!

i'll finish up the dash and console this afternoon and post pics after. gotta go back to work now !!! :sad0147::sad0147:

Just finished the dash and console trim this evening....scroll down for DIY pics.

not quite sure yet.....i must admit i'm thinking about it...there are a couple of nicks over the console area though, very tiny. if you're interested, i can take pics and you decide if you want to PM me a price.

btw, i've re-used Bav's packing for the aluminum trim so it shouldn't be a problem shipping it.

this trim replaces all the current trim on the e90 so yes, i do have the CF trim for the dashboard and the front console. i just haven't had time to do that since i did my doors during lunch (took me about 10 minutes). i'll do the rest tonight when i get home.

So you take the ashtray cover off right? Stick the flat head in turn, great good wonderful, thing pops off no problem. Now you're holding your shiny knew CF cover in one hand and your bastard spawn of satan ash tray in the other going square peg.....round hole....I really don't understand. If you put the lip in first, then the clips don't reach, if you put the clips in first, the lip doesn't reach....wtf!

ran into the same problem. i filed off both the lip of the ashtray base and the edge of the ashtray cover and it fit perfectly.

Interior Trim DIY Part 2 - Dashboard

So got home around 8pm today (took my son to a kid's bday party) and started part 2 of my interior trim install....

Tools:
1. #10 Torx Screw Driver
2. Small Phillips
3. 8mm hex wrench
4. Medium/Large Phillips
5. Pliers

Passenger's Side Trim:
1. Pop trim out using screwdriver placed between 2 cards

2. Pull the trim straight out. The passenger vent will come out without problems. the middle vents are attached by a couple of wires for the DSC, hazard and door lock. you do not need to remove them.

3. Use a 8mm hex wrench to remove the 2 screws holding the vents in place.
4. Detach the starter button by pressing on the side snaps. you may also unplug the harness at the base of the starter to make it easier to move the trim around. just remember to attach it back before installing your new trim.

3. remove the silver snaps and transfer to your new trim.

4. replace the vents and the starter button

5. sit back, have a beer and enjoy your new dash !!!

Part 3 coming up (Console and Ashtray.... PITA !!!!!)

Interior Trim DIY Part 3 - Front Console

So after looking at the previous DIY's about this, i decided to post my own because some steps were left out and ..... i'm having fun doing this...so let's move on....

1. Detach the boot followed by the gear plate.
2. Starting from the edge near the armrest, lift up the trim using a screwdriver between 2 cards.

3. pull up the entire trim all the way to the ashtray. you should be able to lean the trim against your dash if you do it properly. this will make the next step easier.

4. remove the 4 foam pads
5. remove the ashtray wire harness
6. remove the 6 clips

7. remove the 4 torx screws that attach the ashtray to the console

8. DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE 4 SCREW CLIPS THAT SECURE THE TORX SCREWS. IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO SCREW BACK THE ASHTRAY.

At the point, i spent the next hour trying to remove the ashtray trim (about 20 minutes....broke only 1 CLIP !!!). be very gentle if you have aluminum trim as it may bend when you try to lift it up with a medium-sized screwdriver. it's best to use a small screwdriver and insert it on the rear end where you can see 2 wedges. insert it all the way to the shaft and just roll it under the edge of the trim.

I had to file off some of the inner edge of the ashtray cover and the edge of the base of the ashtray cover. I already told Bav about this issue.

Once you're satisfied with the fitment of the ashtray cover, set up the front end first then open the cover, and snap the tabs at the rear.

now you're home free....

9. attach the rear module to the console, rear end first. Bav's trim also had some minor fitment issues here so you may have to file off one of the tabs on the driver's side.

10. attach the ashtray. at this point, make sure that your ashtray opens and closes without hitting the console trim. Again, i had to file the inner edge of the console trim since i had some minimal rubbing.

11. replace your clips, ashtray harness and foam pads.

12. starting from the ashtray end, snap your console trim back in place.

13. snap your gear plate and boot back in place.

14. have another beer...:happyanim :

My new CF Interior !!!! Woohoo !!!!

ashtray

center console

dashboard trim

door trim

Got it done in time for the Chicago meet this weekend !!!

To those who were part of the BavDom group buy, I hope you guys enjoy your new trim as much as I am....

Hmm ok I guess I'll have to try filing down the ash tray cover. Also I guess on the poplar wood trim, the door trim doesn't have the pins like the aluminum trim? We have bolts that are pretty much attached to the wood trim, so I guess I'm going to have to go to BMW tomorrow and see if I can pick up some pins so I can actually fit my door trim.
