Switching from 5w30 to 0w30 at 105k mi

Hello everyone, ive been reading alot on the type of oil used on our engines, ive been using mobil 1 5w30 for the past 40000 miles, the car has no engine light on and runs fine, except for some minor hiccups in the morning during start up, my question is, would switching to the recomended 0w40 mobil 1 cause any problems in my engine? Really considering this if it will benefit my engine now with so many miles on it, especially if it will help the life of my turbos...thanks in advance for your help

Hundreds of members use that specific oil, it’s fine. A good 40W is better for this motor in my mind due to the heat and shear it gets put through. But as with any discussion of oil, 99% of it is anecdotal and everyone runs what they consider to be the “best” oil. Clean fluid is more important than “nice” fluid IMO.

FWIW I’ve run Motul 5W-40 through both my N54s for a combined 30K miles, no obvious issues at all related to oiling but need to get a blackstone report.

I switched to german Castrol 0w-30 (closer to a 40 than a 30) about 50k miles ago. I ran the oem bmw 5w-30 oil before. Since switching, I have noticed the engine feels better and smoother during operation. idk if this is a placebo effect, but yeah lol.

Do it. mobile 1 0w-40 and german Castrol 0w-30 are group IV oils. the oem bmw 5w-30 is a group III. Not a true full synthetic.
