Running Cobb Stage 1+ FMIC - Error Codes

So, I have been running Cobb Stage 1+ FMIC since November without any issues until last week. (2010 335XI, 38K miles)

Right after I filled up at BP, I hit the petal and all of a sudden engine light comes and and every time I pushed the gas, the car would majorly hesitate (The car felt very shaky as if I had a flat tire). I shut the car off, turn it back on, engine light went off, then as soon as I punched it again, same thing. I pulled the codes and got the following:

P29D1 - Misfire, Cylinder 5
H29CE
H2FCA
H2FDA

I uninstalled the COBB software, ran the car for several days and no issues whatsoever. Since I accidentally cleared the codes, and my car is still under FULL warranty, I decided to put the software back on to see if I could get the codes to appear again (So I could bring it in to BMW). The last 2 days, my car has run perfect. NO issues whatsoever. Only difference is I filled the tank up.

So, here comes the stupid question. Could bad gas possibly of been the culprit? 2 minutes after first fill up, problem kept occurring. After new tank of gas, zero issues?

P means a present code

H29CE- Combustion misfire cylinder 2

The other two relate to a potentially bad fuel pump.

See: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=660403

It's possible bad gas caused the P code, but not sure on the others. Basically though the only code your getting ride now is the P code as the others I believe relate to past codes thrown. P indicates still Present.

Thank you. Problem is I cleared all the codes and they aren't coming back. So I can't go to the dealership unless they come back.

I had problems a while back and I cleared them and they never came back. Sometimes its just bad gas like I said. If it comes back then I would get it checked out but otherwise, I wouldn't worry to much about it. My problem was fuel mixture related.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Thanks! Much appreciated.

When you uninstall your Cobb it automatically clears any codes...

Sometimes getting the car to reproduce error codes stock can be difficult...

Hope it was just bad gas, congrats on the tune

Garage List
Be wary, I had misfire and fuel pump related codes, cleared them and I was ok for a week or so then my HPFP took a dump. I was driving hard and couldn't re-create the initial limp mode/codes, once it failed I couldn't go past 2k RPM without going into limp mode.

If it happens again you need new plugs. Thats what fixed mine and it is so easy to do. About like installing a an intake.

Yep, issue came back. I uninstalled the software and since car is under warranty, I have an appointment on Thursday. My question is if uninstalling the software clears the codes, then how can I prove to the dealership I'm actually having an issue???

Is it possible to show them the screenshot I took of the codes and tell them a buddy of mine who works on BMW, accidently cleared the codes? I know it sounds EXTREMELY stupid, but I want them to replace plugs and possible HPFP

Dude, just change the plugs yourself and stop trying to pin this on BMW. Especially when tuned, plugs become a frequent wear item (no surprise there). You're not throwing codes under stock-like conditions for a reason...

Oh, not trying to Pin this on them at all. I just want to make sure it's not just plugs. Like a few posters have said, their HPFP went bad.

BTW,

can you recommend any decent plugs?

what about the coils?

Thanks!

Go with new stock plugs. Of if you want to gap plugs yourself you can get the NGK's we sell.

The misfire issue only happens when you're tuned with Cobb. BMW won't replace the parts if they cannot replicate the issue/ codes. Check the video posted earlier which shows a DIY spark plug and ignition coil change procedure.

Exactly, just what I was afraid of. Since I already have an appt, I wonder how much they would charge to swap out my plugs?

EDIT.

Forget that. I just found out BMW could charge me well over 350.00 to replace. Do I really need some BMW specific tool to do this? can I find it on Amazon?

Everything needed can be purchased off Amazon or ebay for cheap. The dealer will charge you at least a couple hundred for something as simple as a spark plug/coil change. If you don't want to do the work yourself then either the dealership or a third party BMW auto shop will gladly do it.

Update:

Replaced all spark plugs yesterday and though it was a MAJOR pain in the ass, my car is running fantastic! "knock on wood", no codes so far. And though I know spark plugs cannot increase HP, I do notice my car seems to be driving a lot better/smoother. As crazy as it sounds, it's like driving a new car.

The video above was a HUGE help.

Thanks everyone for all advice/help.

If your plugs were weak and kicking the bucket, it's no surprise the car is running smoother. Strangely, I had ar design swap mine @ 45,000 and I'm at 46,000 now. I honestly couldn't tell a difference. All I know is the plugs are on my maintenance schedule now rather than an unknown life span from the previous owner. Preventative maintenance on this engine is pretty much an essential part of being tuned.
