oil temperatures for 335

I haven't driven my 09 335 in hot weather yet as I just purchased it a couple weeks ago. But I notice that the oil temperature hangs around 250 even though the weather is cool right now.

I'm coming from a 370z which are known for needing aftermarket oil coolers, but even my Z usually stayed around 200-220 degrees in the cool weather without an oil cooler. So im worried that once the summer heat comes around, my 335 will be running much higher oil temps.

Just wondering what other people's oil temps look like in cool weather and if you have problems with high oil temps in the summer months?

Need more information.
-Vehicle mileage?
-Ambient temps
-how long does it take to get to 250F, and under what driving conditions?

Takes a while for my car to warm up in this weather but once it does it hangs around 220-230 mark. Occasionally might hit 240 if I'm really pushing it and that takes a while. Don't know if it makes a difference but I have a N55 motor and you have a N54.

Mine hangs out right around 250 also. if I'm pushing it at all, it quickly climbs.

I'm at 105,000 miles. I'll be replacing my thermostat and water pump this summer. Might even replace the radiator with a larger unit.

Sounds normal. Do you have an oil cooler?

I have a stock oil cooler, temps hover between 240-250, never exceeds 250.

Takes a lot longer to reach operating temps in this cold though.

IN the winter in ny around 35 degrees it stays at 210 for me but summer time driving is different. IT will go up to 250 and that bothers me bc the gauge is not centered in the 2007 cars. Very stupid. I am paranoid and stare at it constantly while driving or doing any hard pulls. Bugs me out!!!

if i remember correctly per the manual, the operating temperature should be 250-300.

Normal driving i am around 230-240 with ambient temp of 70F. In the summer when it was 100F, it went up to 255.

I also don't have an oil cooler in my car...

damn thats hot!!!! i rather have an engine temperature gauge in front of me instead of the oil temp. Im scared of overheating and blowing a head gasket instead of looking at oil temps.

300 degrees would be nuts. Oil temp is a much more informative gauge than coolant temp gauge, especially for our turbo engines.

~238 is par for the course on this car. Give or take 10.

I've never heard of an "engine temperature gauge" before.

In a performance car I'd rather know the oil temp then the coolant temp.

Usually 230-240 in 50-70F weather w/an oil cooler. Will approach 250 when "getting on it" but hasn't topped 250 yet, as far as I recall.

In normal driving, higher outside temps just speed up the process of warming up to 240, but then temps "hit a wall" at 240 unless I'm pushing the car (oil cooler). I have to push the car hard to get temps in the 250-260 range, although it does happen at 100F outside at highway speeds. Pre-oil cooler, I could "easily" push the car into limp mode where the protections kick in.

a 370Z engine is not comparable to your 335i. It takes longer to heat up the 335i's 7+ quarts but there is lots of cooling capacity to hold it at around 250. Enjoy the car and forget about the oil temps.
By the way, isn't the Bimmer so much quicker than those low torque Zcars?
I did like the Z on a short course but it ran out of go on the straights!
BTDT!

i rather blow a turbo than a motor tho!! Head gaskets and warped pistons are a more in depth job.

OP seems to have checked out of this thread, which he should have gotten flamed for making since he obviously didn't bother to search.

Guys keep in mind that the ECU likes to run 90% of the time in economy mode, and thus targets oil temps of ~245F, which is the optimal engine temperature for maximum fuel efficiency. If you are 75K miles or above, ditch your water pump, and thermostat, to avoid getting stranded, when they fail. If above 100K, it's time for a new radiator. Other than that, ignore the temp gauges, and enjoy the ride.

That would be true if the cooling system didnt have a warning when it gets close to unsafe temps.

I've read a lot of warnings about the water pump & thermostat but this is the 1st time I've heard anything about the radiator being "at risk."

FWIW, I've owned a lot of cars in my lifetime (some real beaters) and I've NEVER, EVER had a radiator leak let alone had to replace one (unless it got busted in an accident). So, that's the LAST thing I'm going to worry about.

I don't like electronic warnings and rather have a actual mechanical gauge in front of my face! Electronics fail more than a nice fat mechanical gauge on the dash. Don't like the idea of relying on a popup display when I can shut my motor off when I see the gauge rising. Real race cars don't beep and have pictures coming up on a display. In no way am I bashing the reliability of that gauge but I have my preferences.
