Stuck ashtray lid

OK -- call me an idiot and then please help.

I took out the ashtray insert. I keep coins in the empty "ashtray". A few of the coins got wedged in there somewhere. I assume removing the insert allowed the coins to get in some gap.

Now the ashtray lid only opens half way. I assume there are coins stuck behind it. Any idea what I should remove and how I should remove it to get the coins out?

You'll need to remove the center piece.
remove the shifter boot.
then you can grab the center piece one corner at at time and pull.
there are about 6 tabs holding the center piece.

will it be obvious where to apply pressure so the tabs don't break when I pull?

Check out the DIY on sunglass holder install. That tells you step by step how to do it.

When I do this (I've pulled off the center console about 10 times now...) Sit on the center console with sunroof open- pull on your shifter, straight up, and try not to hit yourself in the face. Then pull on the boot and it should pop off too (mine does) it might take a good bit of pulling, be careful. You should then have a big opening where your boot once was. Grip the sides of the opening and pull up one corner at a time like Frank said. That should do it. You'll need to disconnect some wires to take it completely out, but that will be obvious.

I guess I'm idiot #2. However, I benefitted from this thread tonight. Having coins stuck in the lid was driving me nuts. If I hadn't found this post about how to get this trim piece off (DIY sunglass holder install too), I for sure would have broke something. Thanks!
