Run Flat Tire Question

Dealer is telling me that all tires equipped on the 2 series are RFT whether they are summer tires or all season. Can anyone confirm if that's the case? If they aren't all RFT, is there a spare in the car? Which typically have better tread life, RFT or standard?

Thanks!

You need a new dealer...

You can go to bmwusa.com build a m235 and in the options you can see there is a $0 option for RFTs, so it come standard as non-rft summer tires

You guys are only 1/2 correct. All N.American 228's are run flats. Period. All N.American M235's are non run flats. Period.

With the option to upgrade to all season run flats on the 335 correct? Can any of you say which tire will get longer mileage life span?

Wow my dealer is adamant that the only tires offered are run flats. I even called one of those BMW geniuses up (cough Apple) and they couldn't confirm one way or the other. Anything you guys can point me to in order to clear this up?

ask them why runflats are an option on the configurator

Good lord will these discussions ever end??? Tell your ill-informed dealership that the M235 will come with Michelin non-runflats. If you want to "downgrade" to runflats, it'll be Option 458. Lifespan on either tire will depend on how you use/abuse them. You'll be doing yourself a huge disservice by going with the run flats. This car (suspension tuning/handling, etc) was NOT developed with these in mind. And run flats, particularly lower profiled ones like these, ride like crap compared to the Super Sports which are excellent tires. Your choice though.

Still waiting for confirmation here in Canada whether non-RFTs are an option (as suggested by the Cdn configurator), even though the Dealer swears only RFTS available. As for wear and performance +1 for what Mark's M states - in my experience w RFTs and advice from my tire guy, they don't like RFTs because they wear quicker and run a bit rougher (albeit not a big deal if dealing w a car w plenty of power like the M235i). And no spare if u go w non-RFTs but who cares, u get free BMW road side assistance for 4 years I think.

The question of tread life really doesn't have much to do with if the tires are RFT or not. Summer performance tires wear faster than all seasons. Its the tradeoff you make to get a softer compound that sticks better. In my experience, most of the complaints about having to replace RFT on shorter intervals were because the tires either wore unevenly and caused significant noise or they were damaged by a pothole. RFT seem to have more of a propensity to do both, unfortunately.

Finally got direct confirmation from BMW Canada today that our standard tire for the M235i is in fact the Michelin PSS. At first they said "PS2" and I had to ask "PS2" or "Pilot Super Sport"? He didn't know there was a difference!

Agreed, summers wear faster no doubt, and interesting info about RFTs (although I've not experienced these problems). In my experience w RFTs, having had two Bimmers w them, both sets were Bridgestones A/S and had a mere 35-38K on them at end of lease and were at or near the min acceptable standard... that seems like poor wear to me for an A/S?

Its possible. I guess you'd have to look at the wear rating to be sure. The best comparison would be between the RFT and non RFT of the same tire.

Even within the all season category tires wear rate and grip levels vary quite a bit. i.e. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 vs Defender. Both "all season" but...

Why people don't like runflat tires?

On my M235i, I got the Bridgestone Potenza 225/40 R18 delivered with the car. They are runflat and considered as summer tires.

The complaints people have are usually based on past experiences with other BMW models. I have yet to hear a complaint about the ones on the 2 series and whether or not the newer runflat generations are improved over the older ones so maybe you can chime in on that once you have properly worn them in. And this will take more than initial impressions since some of the issues became more pronounced as they wore (such as louder and louder road noise).

Complaints typically were loud road noise, very harsh on bumps and imperfections on the road, possibly damaging wheels during pothole impacts, cupping of the tires on the sidewall and the cost of replacing one of those after a flat (since once you drive on it flat it basically ruins the tire on the inside in the process and won't be fixable).

I'm hopeful about them and the improvements that have been made. I hope to eventually get one that is no different from non-runflats as the idea of never having to stop because of a flat tire is a very good thing.

I have Pirelli P7 all season run flats on my M235i, they are my first rft and I don't see a big difference between these tires and normal ones. I bought Pilot Super Sports for the summer and will swap these onto another set of rims for the 6 months a year we might see snow.
