Squeeky Steering Wheel?
This morning my steering wheel started to squeek turning right or left. It squeeks with very small turns or large turns moving or stopped. What is up with this? Anyone have the same issue and what did they do to stop it?
Note: this is my first problem with the car and I now have 3,333 miles on her. |

I have the same issue with my steering wheel. Seems to come and go. Hasn't done it in a couple of weeks though. I told my SA about it when I took the car in for service but they couldn't find any problems.

Sorry to read about the squeeking. It is best to take it to the dealer for them to attend to, just to remove the irritation factor even if there isn't anything "wrong".
All the best

I had that a while back as well. I found that if I unlocked the tilt/telescope of the steering wheel, moved it up and down a bit then re-locked it in the proper position the noise went away.

The best thing to do is tell every little problem to your dealer so they can record it. If later on that little problem becomes a big problem at least you have documentation that your tried to get them to fix before it became a huge problem!

I had this exact same problem. I took the car in to have it looked at and they ended up using some lubrication to solve the issue. It seems to have worked so far, but I am completely, utterly unhappy with my entire steering column. I am still having this issue when I turn at slow speeds. The steering wheel feels loose and knotchy even after they replaced some gears that was supposed to fix this issue.
Anyways, do a search on "steering wheel squeaking" and you should come across another thread we had on this matter. |

Same problem

My car is about 6-month old @ a mileage of about 10,000km. Recently my dealer discovers a leak at the expansion hose serving the power steering system after i sent in the car for the 2nd time complaining oil traces are always found surrounding the hoses below the fan belt assembly and the undercarriage cover of the engine compartment. Not very sure this is the source of the squeeking problem and my appointment to replace the hose is on 13 Jan 06. Shall keep you guys informed the outcome of this exercise |

Please let me know how this turns out with hose repair? I still have the squeeks and don't want to take it to the dealer. I am afraid they will start tearing into things to find the squeek. I called them a few weeks ago and they said there is no US recalls posted yet in their internal computer. We all need to find out what is going on with this squeeky business. Please stay on top of this one. Thanks!!

hi guys! squeeky noise gone after hose replacement work on 13 Jan. Dealer confirmed hose job only killed the leak and contributed nothing to the noise. They silenced the noise by unlocking the tilt/telescope steering wheel, adjusted it to a new location and re-locked it back. NOw the steering is perfoming quietly and i m satisfied. Cheers!

mike2 I tried this procedure several times and it seemed to work at first and now it squeeks every day. This is very disappointing and the dealer is stating there is no bulletins on this problem. I find it hard to believe because there are more of us reporting this in this forum. I have an appt on 2/2 to have it looked at by the dealer. I sure hope they get to the root of this problem. Driving this car is no fun with the squeek going on with every turn. It sounds like my kid's beater!!!

Same issue here with no resolution
My 325 has about 7K miles now and has been doing this since day 1. Its been to 2 different dealers and they say everything is fine.
It seems to squeak more on warm days. I am afraid of taking it back again because they might open things up and start breaking things... Very dissapointing because the BMW steering is one of the reasons I bought the car. |

mine seems to have gone away for now, not sure why. i had it squeaking every turn about a month ago.
i've heard of similar complaints for the 7 series too. u'd think bmw would get a clue on how to build a quiet steering wheel and seatbelt by now. |

This is an update as promised. I completed my visit to the dealer on the "Squeaky Steering Wheel" which now does not squeak anymore. Here is what the tech wrote on the invoice to repair. "ISOLATE STEERING COLUMN SQUEAK TO FIREWALL BOOT. REMOVE LOWER DASH PANEL & FOUND UPPER BOOT SLEEVE NOT FITTED PROPERLY & THE BOOT JUST RUBBING ON THE STEERING SPINDEL ALSO HEARD NOISE FROM LOWER SPINDEL BEARING LUBE BOTH BEARINGS & REASSEMBLE FIREWALL BOOT PROPERLY."
Hope this helps. You don't have to live with the squeak Guys & Gals. |
