No boost gauge?

Does anyone know if there is one or not? I know the two 335i coupes I had did not have a boost gauge. Do any of the turbocharged engines have them? If not why?

Good question. I've had four (gasoline) turbos, all with boost gauges. The only turbos I've seen previously with no boost information were turbo-diesels. And now most of the new direct-injection cars. Is it related to DI?

Unless we could adjust amount of boost manually, no point for a gauge

I would like a boost gauge. I would also like engine oil pressure and engine and transmission oil temp gauges. I don't necessarily need them on the cluster, but it would be nice to be able to pull them up on the display screen. Especially if you track your car, they are all important number to be able to monitor. I could care less about torque and HP guages.

Yes!

The car should already have this information, it would just be a matter of accessing it. Perhaps there will be a "track app" that allows display of this information?

Boost gauge would be cool, but it isn't relevant to most people. Doubt there will be one

If the turbos not putting out anything near 18.1 psi I would like to know. Then again if you don't know, that's less complaining BMW will have to deal with.

A boost gauge is very unlikely.

You would have to buy something separate like an UltraGuage which plugs into your OBD port. It would display the info you want. I use one in my other car, which is turbo and it's great.

Not an OEM solution, but it does at least give you what you want.

I run an android phone with a proclip mount and a bluetooth obdii reader just for this purpose. Sure would be nice if it was integrated though.

I wish it had a boost gauge. If the engine isn't meeting it's expected targets is a good sign of trouble. Also you can see if the ICU is cutting boost due to heat. You'll become obsessed with it if you are running any kind of tune. Even without a tune, it's good to have. I think it's a good instrument if you care at all what's going on with your engine.

If the turbos aren't meeting boost targets, then a check engine light, limp mode, or both will happen. The computer watches this a lot more closely than humanly possible. Also, with this car, the hotter it gets, the more boost it runs to maintain its rated power output. The max it can run is 18 psi. Under normal conditions, I think it'll run about 14.

I am sure their will be a vent gauge which can be installed to see all that info and more.

Oops, I should have been more careful with my lingo. I didn't mean the internal boost targets and agree that not meeting them would generate a CEL. I meant it in a more rudimentary way about seeing the boost the engine is supposed to be making rather than what the engine wants it to make. I can understand why BMW might not want want to generate unnecessary service calls because owners think that they aren't getting the advertised boost.

Boost does go up in the heat to make consistent power, as it goes down in the cold. The same with altitude. This what piggybacks use to trick the engine into producing more boost and thus more power than intended. I realize it is not as simple as that. The N54 at least would start cutting power before it went into limp mode. I'm hoping that the new M's water IC (and whatever other cooling strategies that have been engineered into it) helps keep engine heat under control as it really was the Achilles heal of the 335.

No one wants to go into limp mode with their new expensive hot rod. It's embarrassing.
