Buying a car with only V5C/2 New keepers supplement
I'm about to buy a 330d LCI and have been running and HPI check.
All has come back clear so far, not stolen etc. On speaking to the seller; he has just realised he never received the V5 document and only has the V5C/2. Normally I'd be weary of this but I have met the guy, been to his house so my thinking is take the V5C/2 when I buy the car and request a new log book in my name? Thoughts? |

Either he never got the V5 - lost in the post or something at the DVLA or he's had the car for only a very short time and not got the V5 yet... You're supposed to give them 6 weeks maximum to get the V5 to you.
I'd get him to phone the DVLA, and check whether the car is registered to him on their system... If he's legit he'd do this with you present and put it on speakerphone. Personally - I'd wary until I see the actual V5 document in his name. Last edited by bobster635d; 02-08-2014 at 09:50 AM.. |

Id be on the defensive some
Hpi ask for the serial no on the V5 to verify the v5 is genuine If he has not received it yet how long has he had the car and does he know something you don't I'd ask to see his receipt where he has proof where he bought it from then go from there |

I've seen the V5C/2 and have a picture of it so I'll call the DVLA on Monday and see what they can tell me.
I've done a bit of googling which has provided his business details, accounts etc and registered address of the business which has been the same for 10 years and is the address I've been to and the address he wrote on the deposit receipt so I feel a little better. |

Iv been in this situation before too with my old car
Take a receipt stating: time, date of purchase... Along with a copy of driving licence Also you should be ok as long as you have the green slip and send it off my friend ... Just make sure it doesn't need taxing as you're be shafted as you 100% need the log book to Do it |

It was quite worrying and makes me think it would be rather easy to get a v5 for any car!
I.e walk up to a car Get VIN off front window Apply for V5 |

The DVLA do contact the registered keeper they have on their records to find out if they still own the car or not. It's not as simple as just telling the DVLA you're the new registered keeper and they take your word for it
