COBB Pro-Tune - Litchfield Imports

Hi all.

I've been with COBB OTS Stage 2+ for a long while now and while it's A LOT of fun it's easy to spot the less refined qualities of this generic mapping although, not short on power, hovering around the 410bhp mark (average) on Dyno Dynamics rolling roads.
I'm plunging for a Pro-tune as, with no real plans to replace turbo's with RB's or add meth, it makes sense to customise the mapping for the car as it'll stay (and I am power hungry it seems).

Has anyone any experience of Litchfield Imports for BMW, or at all? I hear great things about them from Subaru & GTR owners but they seem relatively unheard of within the BMW crowd and, from what I can tell, are the only official UK COBB Pro-Tuner.

They offer to PRO-Tune my car but suggest a road tune which is fine, so long as I am not driving as I don't wish to get caught deep into 4th gear (the reason why I discounted Pro-Tuning Freaks E-Tune). I am expecting great things, based on the feedback of PRO-Tunes from US members so I guess let's see what Litchfield can do.

I have a PRO-Tune and it works much better than the OTS maps as all cars are individual.

I do third gear but you are right about the risks. I used Pro-Tuning Freaks as they have much more experience with the platform especially with regards to n54 specifics like VANOS etc.

Oh just to add, PTF do a remote dyno tune which might be a good option also?

Called them two months ago, about price and stock of a Cobb product, couldn't even tell me there and then whether they had it, or how much it was, took my number, still waiting for that call.

There are several Cobb stockists/tuners listed in UK, but most seem to be GTR biased, and not really interested in BMW, or they want to charge you £150 more than you can import it for yourself.

Well that's my experience having called them all.

They're a very well experienced place, who do a lot of tuning on other cars, and do some M3 stuff, they have an E92 M3 track car.

I spoke to Ian, a while back. Seemed like a good chap.

They are quite big on the GTR forums.

Is a "customed" map really worth the money? How different will it be from the std cobb map?

It generally is much better.

I used to map my own Mitsubishi Evo, and a few friends Evos and 200sx's. And you can get a much smoother map when you do it specific to that car and any mods it has. Generic maps are more compromised.

+1 the generic maps leave a lot on the table as far as performance is concerned as they are designed to work with any car.

Plus you get the option of custom throttle mapping and any other individual features you might require like a custom boost curve.

Just go with PTF. Awesome guys, amazing support and they are always around to answer any questions you like over email unlike 99.9% of the shop out there.

Think I'm going to get a pro tune after reading this more for piece of mind though rather than using an ots map

I have an Aquamist system and they recommend using 99.9% only:

Plus they will revise the map if you get additional bolt on mods for free. Only charge will be if you run e85 or add meth and want a new map.

PTF E-Tune ordered . I went out and did some logs already (using COBB pre-set logging checklist) which I plan to send to them right away; do I wait for them to contact me? I couldn't see any clear instruction on their website regarding who instigateds the communications.

Congrats!

I would email Jake:

jake@protuningfreaks.com

Include the details of the transaction and you will start from there. Remember to include info on the car and fuel you are using.
