DPF removal

This may be a silly question but wel see. I do huge mileage and with it now being an MOT failure to have no DPF would it be worth my while removing it?

They do get blocked/knackered and theyr very expensive replace. Would it be sensible to have a delete pipe made to give me a bit extra go and then come MOT time I can put the DPF back in?

I know there is controversy surrounding removal. What seems to be the general consensus on it these days?

If your doing lots of miles and the DPF is giving no trouble then I'd leave it alone....

Not worth saving it for MOTs?

I'd leave it in place. I went through this recently with a partially blocked DPF, after weighing up the implications... MOT inspections...potential sell on issues... etc decided it's a hassle thing to maintain, but potentially cheaper and less hassle than if I removed it.

If you want a bit of extra oomph then i say go for it, i doubt you'll even need to refit it come MOT time but if you do it's not a hard job on the 4 cylinder diesels unlike the 6 cylinders. Hardest part was seperating the existing dpf from the mid section but once it's done once it shouldn't be too much of an issue in future. And as you say keeps your DPF in good condition.

Youve understood the idea 100% man. The oomf doesnt worry me, but keeping it in good MOT - passing nick IS a worry. Theyr an absolute fortune to replace and the age of the car and the miles I do itl be sooner rather than later I imagine. Would it be quite simple to just put a delete pipe in then refit it come mot time? Would I need the warning light coded out whilst it was out of place? And would it endanger the motor?

Yes you would still need to have it remapped to stop the engine trying to undertake the regen.

Yes it's not a dificult job to do on the 4 cylinders once the undertray is off theirs few bolts to undo which really which arent that hard to access either and then seperate the DPF from the mid which could be easy or it could be a pain vehicle dependant.

Have a chat to Ecotune. They're based in Glasgow. Look out for a group buy on one of the forums you can get as much as 20% off one of their DPF delete kits.

Why not cut the DPF open, smash the insides out, weld in a straight pipe, then weld the cover back on the DPF so it "looks" standard.....not like their going to remove your exhaust to check it for MOT

It's short journeys that kill the filters, not doing higher milages. As said before, if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Sounds like your going to open a can of worms and a load of hassle every year come MOT time.

Do you actually have a DPF problem?

Because if it's left alone you don't need to touch it at all

Until it blocks at which point it could be mega bucks but each to their own

I wanted some more power too so as I was getting it remapped anyway I thought it would be rude not too....

For info at MOT time mine blew 0.03ppm the limits is 1.5ppm the machine couldn't even detect that the engine was being revved with the exhaust probe so they had to connect a cable to the battery terminals to detect the increase in RPM.
