Options insurance?
As it seems that every bmw will come with a few thousand quids worth of options do these have to be noted down as modifications for insurance purposes?
Eg up rated m sport brakes, tinted window, adaptive suspension, bigger alloys etc...... |

No they don't mate as it's not a modification, it's all standard.

Agreed as above. No need to mention everything. In fact, when I've done this in the past, they dont know what you are on about (eg adaptive lights etc...) and dont have an item on their screen that matches some options.
If you need to claim for a write-off or stolen, you will mostly get the basic list price anyway... BUT this is why you take out GAP.

So should you tell them when adding a rear spoiler AFTER purchasing the car? Will they check your original invoice in the case of a claim or am I being paranoid?

I think yes because they will see it as a modification.

Hello, insurance dude here!

Always tell them, though for minor cosmetic things like this, often there will be nil charge. It's when you start getting into mods that affect the performance, handling or chassis that we're really interested. |

I said this before: I think (!) modification in insurance terms refers only to changes which invalidate the homologation (type approval) of a car.
Need to verify this from a reliable source, but haven't got the time really. Am pretty sure though. |

HI,
I ended up paying £30-40 extra for options i.e. : Xeon Lights - Come under "Exterior decoration changes" M Sport Brakes - "Brakes Uprates" VVS Steering - "Sports/Active suspension (opt ext)" 18-192 Wheels - "Alloy wheels (optional extra)" - i think this need removing Sat Nav Pro, EBT - "Interiorr changes" as they consider then as non standard, and as such impact the market value of the car. I rang them and spoke to some f**king India retard (bring the god dam call centres back to the UK - rant over) and explained that the options are part of a list of items that can be bought for the car, still no change as they see them as modifications over the standard 330d M Sport. Not sure if i should be paying extra for any of the above but speaking with the Indian call centre peeps, is like repeatable smashing your head into a wall, whilst somebody kicks you in the balls. Either change your insurance or get in touch with ombudsman. If your car is built with factory fitted (configuration build usually PLCS) then they are standard parts.. Imagine if a dealer added them as free or some Easter special. Seriously you have a fair amount of lea way with what is fitted, as long as not significant post build mods. |

I couldnt care less about the market value as GAP will top it up if you have a total loss.

Name and shame them if they are trying to add costs by saying you need to pay for options, it's a bit like some of bank rip-offs. |

Guys, I really think we have to make a difference between options/additions (say leather seats, sat nav, i.e. stuff your add from catalogue when you order) and modifications which affect the homologation (a technical term of the car and motor sport industry, which is in English speaking countries probably more known as type approval)
See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_Approval and here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homologation If an insurer adds to the annual premium due to pricey extras, then it will be due to the higher replacement value of the car, not because it's called a modification. Legal speak and common parlance are often worlds apart. Homologation deals a lot with emission value, the existence of say rear fog light left or right, headlight washers which in the EU have to be there when you have Xenon lights, dark tinted privacy films, electro magnetic compatibility, engine noise etc etc etc. Insurers would need to look much closer before they insure a vehicle with relevant modifications. Some may refuse as it's just too much work on their part. |
