How much wear from your run flats?

For those that have done a few thousand miles, what kind of wear are you getting from your run flats? Front and rear?
On my old E90, I only got about 10K miles from the rears , so I'd hope these new generation run flats are much better.

Hopefully xdrive will help you on this by limiting any wheelspin that will take miles off your tyres! Though what you gain in extra miles on your rears will probably be lost in how much your front tyre wear goes up!

Ha true! It will be very interesting to see if there is a lot of difference in tyre wear between sdrive and xdrive.

IMO this is correct, you will most likely get more miles out of the rears, with a significant reduction in the life of the fronts.

Expect to have to change all 4 at the same time. All in the tyre bill will be higher on an AWD.

I'm not sure Run Flat has much influence on tread wear, other than limiting the tread wear options available???

Any reason why you think it will be higher overall? I can think of reasons why it may go up overall or down, and no genuine experience to call on. Would be curious to know how Audis compare FW v the quattro versions.

It comes down to the tracking and diff drag across the axles.

In a RWD the front tracking is a little toe in, on the understanding that when driving the wheel drag will open the toe-in out a little, meaning near straight tracking. There is a little toe in still to ensure under braking the wheels don't toe out too much. Toe out under braking is something to avoid as it makes the car skittish under brakes.

On a FWD/AWD front axle, there is significantly more movement in the tracking, which in it's own right tends to increase wear. Move movement because it not only cruises and brakes like a RWD but also has positive torque situations too.

Also the diff drag hurts too, so to have it on both axles is the worst scenario. As we know a FWD car hardly wears the rears, but suffers pretty bad wear on the fronts.

My quattro wore the fronts pretty quick, but then again that was a FWD with rear torque transfer when needed. Rears wore quicker than the rears on a FWD Audi due to diff drag.

Some truth in that, however overall AWD cars will wear tyres less than RWD. The reduction in rear tyre wear more than outweighs the increase in front tyre wear. I've had AWD Subaru's for years (both company and personal). No I own both a RWD BMW & a AWD Subaru.

As for wear, haven't had the 5er long enough to change then yet. Mrs 1er lasted about 15k rear / 20k front. For comparison, the Subaru's would easily last more than 30k and wore equally front / rear.

Interesting stuff. I should keep better track of my tyre usage, have some notes, but nothing like as accurate or as well organised as my fuel tracker.

30k on a Subaru?

Mine did 18k on 'hard tyres' 15k typical. And rears wore slightly more than the fronts.....but that was an STi which has more rear bias than lesser models.

Still on original tyres from new and just over 30k miles, reckon they will go to the next service around 33-34k before needing replacing, and interestingly they are wearing equally front to back.

I still had 4-5mm all round when I swapped to Winters in November. Odo was just shy of 18k at the time. Should get through the summer on them and buy a new set in Spring 2015.

I was looking at my tyres yesterday. I have 28k on mine and I estimate I have about 5k left on the rears. The fronts will probably be the same as the outer edge has worn more on the tyres. If the fronts had worn evenly I think I would have got another 10-12k from them.

Interesting results folks, thanks for posting...

The new run flats certainly seem to last A LOT longer than the old E90 run flats. Pretty much at least double the mileage.

I used to have a TT quattro which I traded in with 18k on the clock and original tyres all round.

I can concur with the above. Only got 16k out of yen previous run flats on my E92. Had 7mm left all round when I swapped for winters with 12k miles done!
