Look in the owner's manual for details and make sure you use synthetic oil too.

I use Castrol as my dealer said it is the best.I also asked few taxi car owners and they also said that you should use Castrol oil.

Remember kiddies...The Castrol sold from retail outlets in the U.S. is not the same as the Castrol sold by the BMW dealerships. It may be different in Europe.

Only the Mobil 1 0W-40 is approved in the USA, in europe the brand new ESP 5W-30 Mobil 1 is approved ( The bottle must say LL-01 or LL-04 approved )

In the service manual for US models, it says Mobil 1 5W-30. Don't tell me that the US maintenance manual is for European model...duh.

When I was low this weekend and checked my manual (USA, May purchase) it said to use API - SH or higher, fully synthetic, 5-30 or 40. It also said to call your dealership or BMW NA for assistance if you couldn't get to a dealer. Well, it was Sunday so no dealer. BMW NA was closed as well. I punched in for Roadside assistance and the lady read me the manual over the phone She even told me the phone number to call. I told her that's how I got to her in the first place, thanks and goodbye.
