Tire and Wheel Insurance / Runflats

What kind of experience are people having with the BMW runflats around the Boston area? I'm picking up a 328d with stock 17" wheels and all-season tires next week and wondering about the insurance. It's $1,149 for 5 years with a $50 deductible per incident. Dealer cost to replace stock tire is about $300 installed. How many flats have you had due to nails/potholes?

Has anyone found a place in the metro North Boston area that patches run flat tires with slow leaks (where car has not yet ridden on and ruined the sidewalls)?

They wanted $2400 at my dealership, covering both tires and rims. Forget that, I can get the tires for $200 and have the gear to mount and balance them myself. Rim damage comes from hitting potholes or curbs, so careful driving is the cure for that ailment. I also made sure not to get 18s, which wasn't easy, as most inventory has them. The greater the rubber to rim ratio the smoother the ride and the less likely you are to damage either the tire or the rim. 45 and smaller aspect ratios look nice but are a lot more risky.

Yea if you can mount & balance the tires yourself it's definitely not worth it to buy that "insurance".

Also 2400 is way too high. I got mine for $900 - 5years, both tires & rims.

I've had my car for about 2.5 years and only used it once - i looked at the invoice, the dealership put about $300 on it. (I have 18inch all seasons by the way).
You will have to replace at least 3 tires (or break 2 rims) in 5 years to make $900 worth.

So I guess it's not worth it, unless you have super bad luck...that's why I bought it...before I bought this car, I replaced 4 tires in a year (damn you random nails in the Chicago suburbs!) I guess that bad luck is gone (touch wood)

Oh by the way it doesn't cover any cosmetic damages. So yea if you scratched the rims on a curb or something, they are not gonna fix/replace it under the insurance.

I wouldn't even pay the $900. These are like all extended warranties, for which you get the hard sell for anything and everything, right down to a toaster. You get the hard sell because they're so profitable for the seller. It's essentially a gamble, where they're betting that the product isn't going to fail, while you're betting that it will. Like all gambling situations there are some instances where the gambler wins in the short run, but in the long run the house always wins.
The fact that I haven't blown a tire since 1972 weighed even more heavily in my decision.

I beg you to try to avoid every pothole in MA, it's impossible. I drive like a hawk with regards to potholes, they are literally unavoidable if you live in the more urban parts. killed two runflat sottozero's in a month. Thank god for tire insurance
I did not however pay 2400 for it, that's insanity.

Buy your replacement tires from Tire Rack and they include road hazard insurance in the price. That seriously degrades the value of dealer insurance. BTW, Tire Rack puts the average value of two years of road hazard insurance at $15 per tire.

My insurance was $1595 for six years and includes cosmetic damage. First car with rft's so it was more of a peace of mind thing - worry free for six years was attractive to me and cost me $25/mnth over the five years. 18" AS on new F33.

Definitely

At the dealership to change my 3rd and 4th tires today. One with a nail puncture and another one with bubbles. I own a 435i xDrive Convertible. Had car since September of last year. The only problem was that I drove to the dealer today to repair the car. Since I had run flats I thought I would not have problem but he told me since I drove with no psi on my puncture tire it damaged the sensor which was NOT covered.

My thinking is what good is the run flats then????

Run flats are junk ..always bubble at smallest pothole ! First thing I do is dump the runflats and the car rides way better even with an upgrade in wheel and tire size

Yeah, try going out to some parts of Metrowest... Two bubbles in one year
of regular driving, and that's quite literally being anal about every pothole.

I believe Directtire does the same thing/something similar as well. If you feel bad about getting rid of your runflats while barely using them, see how long they last for shits and giggles before you get proper tires.

I have replaced 5 Runflats in the last 10 months.
What a fucking nightmare.
Anyone have a nice 18" wheel and tires set up that they like, perhaps in an All season? something that can withstand potholes?

Conti DWS's have been doing superb with all the potholes in Boston so far.

What profile tire are you running 35, 40?
I heard that Conti's can have a weak side wall. I blew one out pretty badly once on a pothole on 93. That's the only decent thing about a runflat is that you can drive on it for a little while.

The aspect ratio profile? 45, actually. I have BMW Assist and AAA if I ever blow a tire, and a patch kit in my trunk. After 3 years living in fear on MA roads of damaging a tire, I actually realized that having RFTs were getting me damaged tires. I couldn't justify the ride quality anymore, either, going onto the DWS's were like night and day.

Out of curiosity, what do you do in case of a flat when you dump the runflats? Does the car come with a patch and inflate kit anyway? Never had a car with runflats before, and just ordered my 340 with the 19" 422 M orbit grey wheels. I put Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my S4 shortly before I sold it, and I think I'd definitely rather have those again than the runflats.

Get a patch kit from Amazon for 30 bucks. Those things are useful to have around, run flat or not.
