Pothole=1blowout +1 cut sidewall =1 damaged rim...pics!
This sucks and happened 3 days ago. New winter tires with 800 miles on them. Knew the second I hit it and sure enough 2 secs later the car lit up like a christmas tree.
Limped about a half mile home. Of course these aren't runflats and my patch kit and compressor couldn't have helped. TireRack was gracious enough to send me a new tire at half price overnight. Jacked up the car and brought the new tire in for replacement. I was nervous that the rim was damaged but got lucky there. Only after a car wash did i notice the cut in the rear tire and damage to the rim. Should i replace the rear as well? The whole thing sucks! Does anyone know who I could buy 3rd party tire protection from? Thanks!

ouch! Sorry about the misfortune. What is the middle picture of? Certainly that can't be what flattened the tire.

Thanks! That is the pothole, took a picture the next day. Looks unimpressive from the pic but really is about 4"-5" deep. I think i also caught it funny based on the cut in the rear tire. Blows!

if the 3rd photo is the cut in the rear tire i would definitely replace. Seems like something that is going to go soon.
With respect to tire protection, how many tires/rims have you replaced? if this is your first time and you've been driving for 5+ years odds are it isn't worth the monthly premium. If you get them yearly and it seems to be a re-occurring cost then it may make sense |

Wow, that definitely sucks!
I was about to say the same thing as flyguy, though... Was that really the thing that did the damage? From this angle, it looks quite shallow :| Edit: Nevermind, you already answered, as I was writing the question

You can buy any tire/road hazard plan from any major discount tire dealer: America's Tire Co., Just Tires, Discount Tire, etc. You order the tire from them and pay full price, you pay $80 extra and it covers the replacement of any of your tires free of charge, if damaged or blown for any reason, they do free alignment, etc. All you pay is balancing I think. I've done this with every car I've ever had. Used it 5 times on my GTI because my Conti DWS were bubbling and blowing out often. Paid for the tire the first time and all the times after, it was covered. As for the bent wheel, that's the costliest and for that, you're on your own unless you paid through the nose for BMW's wheel/tire protection program.

Who did you get your winter tires from? Tirerack and discounttire offer road hazzard protection when you buy tires from them for a very reasonable price.

That pothole looks like the 8" deep crater I ran into the other night. That barrel was put there after I hit it. My alignment is way out and the cars drifts to the right. Will get an insight on Thursday when the dealer looks it over.

I got 19s and for a while thought about 20s. Then I went on a road trip and hit a few mis-aligned road seams (e.g. where road meets bridge/overpass). Every single time my heart stopped as I waited for the tire pressure monitor alarms. Thankfully nothing so far, but I'm definitely not getting 20s anymore!

Buy your tires from Discount Tire and get their hazard coverage. Their base price is usually higher than Tire Rack but with free shipping it usually ends up cheaper.

That cut in the 3rd pic looks pretty long. Dont know how deep it is, but I think it would be a good idea to have it replaced also. Especially if you can see the white cloth underneath it.. In any case it won't be bad to have a pro look at it.

I know how you feel. I hit a pothole last winter a put a nice bubble in one of my at the time almost new winter tires. Tried to file a claim with the city but got denied and ended out of pocket for a new tire.

What justification does the city have to deny compensation for damage that their crappy roads caused?

Not necessarily. I've tried. City of L.A. gives zero fucks.
