What are you going on as the period? 1000 miles?

We passed that at the weekend!

I do feel the car loosening up a bit already, which is good, and was playing about in Sport+ too. Playing too much perhaps as the last tank was 36mpg!

Well this is my first high powered car so thought I'd go by the book. To be honest I've been so busy with work that I haven't really had the time to mess about properly.
I'm currently at 1160miles so some time this week I will open her up 100%

I've had a quick play with the modes too but not done a kick down yet. I can't wait to floor it from a standing start...

I've done kick down a couple of times. What I really want to try is launch control!

Perhaps you'll be so kind as to repeat this 80-200km/h run, for scientific purposes

I'd like to do that to compare the 335dx with the figures that Hartge use for their ECUs that birds garage fit!

I must admit I've neglected the run in period a few times. I've waited so long for the car, there's no way I couldn't push it and see what it's capable of. I'm trying to refrain until 1000 miles at least.

Where does it suggest a running in period? isn't this what warranties are for?

Several schools of thought on this.

Personally I am not revving the pants off it until 1000 miles in and I am waiting until the engine is warmed up before accelerating hard/using sport mode. This is proving very difficult.

I was told by my dealer not to exceed 100mph until 1000 miles in but apart from that do what you want!

Slightly jealous of you BMWSKI. Enjoy!

As I'm collecting in early March, I need to consider my first steps. I've already posted the following in a 'full performance' thread, but it seems more relevant in this 'run in' thread:

My very first drive will a 160 mile trip home after collecting from the dealer. I am interested in what people recommend for the very first part of the run in period. I'm guessing:-

Little above 3500rpm
Nothing above 4000rpm
No use of kickdown
Don't stick to the same speed (eg. cruise) for more than 5 minutes at a time.

It will be my first ever drive in a 335d (tested a 330d), so I'm hoping not to read 'nothing above 2500rpm'!

Regardless of anyone's position on the correct way to run-in their car & engine, there must be a fair amount of wiggle room in that 1,200 mile recommendation.

OP - Kudos if you can keep your foot off the gas for another 40 miles but, one way or another, I hope you drop the hammer pretty soon. Please tell us about too!

Complete waste of time and mileage running a car in, you will sell it before the warranty runs out anyway so who cares

As long as the oil is up to temperature give it the beans, what makes me laugh is people who run their car in carefully and then thrash it from cold when they have done 1000 miles

As a ball park indicator Hartge quote before and after figures on the F10 535d - quite a significant difference:

80 - 180 km/h (sec) - 11.23s v 15.56 s (4.33 s quicker)
0 - 200 km/h (sec) - 18.95 s 24.27s (5.32s quicker)

Pretty much. They do this at the factory. The car is ready to go. I had a 60 mile drive home from the dealership the other day with my new car and there was no way in hell I was going to drive my new BMW like a grandma all the way home. Ridiculous.
