Decent double din?
Looking to buy a decent double din mainly for the kids to watch some DVDs in the car,
Passenger seat and rear middle, Was looking at the divine units but quality and fit seems cheap. So what's everyone else using looking for something about £200 |

Car radios do much more than for your car than receive radio one these days, so it's unlikely to be a simple plug & play swap and may even cause problems |

You'd be better off spending 200 on a 2nd hand Alpine than a new lesser quality unit.
Have a hunt on something like talkaudio forum, I got my 7" Alpine on there for under 200, and then a free view digital tuner for it for about £70 (about £200 new) and then a sat nav unit off ebay for £100 (around £400 new!) |

Playing a DVD in a moving car is not illegal at all if its just for the rear screens. Yes, it is for the front one. I used to have the TV on in my RS4 all the time, it made a nice change to listen to something interesting instead of the radio on long trips |

Do we really need that?
Ian expressed a fact. So take it easy bud.

I was referring to the OPs original post, "passenger seat & rear middle" which I think you'll find will be illegal, but let's not be pedantic about this

That's a new one - don't believe there's any specific legislation?
And doesn't the jazzy new system in Range Rovers show (and play) a different screen to the front passenger than the driver, so even the front passenger can watch something? Last edited by G82Dude; 01-12-2014 at 08:25 AM.. |

And as mentioned earlier, a front seat passenger is able to view TV/DVD/etc. in a Range Rover (and the new S class) with their jazzy dual-view screens. Last edited by G82Dude; 01-12-2014 at 05:20 PM.. |

This is the one I had, its a few years old now but still excellent.
The only thing is that if you want nav or tv tuner you have to buy them separately, where as the newer ones have it built in. It all depends on what you want it to do really. What are the main features you are after? Mine didn't have a CD player, but as I never used it (had an iPod connected) it didn't bother me. This was mine: Theres one on ebay here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alpine-iXA...item1e8566ab5e Regarding PDC, won't the bleeps still work? |

I'm also interested in a double din.
Had been when I first got the car then lost interest as I was lookign at the other mods, now at the position of wanting one again though. I remember back when I was looking there was one called the dinivan or something along those lines? Everyone warned to stay away from it and suggested a Kenwood one but I forget the model. Had it on my eBay watch list & think it was around £3/400 with all features needed pretty much. What's the best option currently though, does alpine seem to be one to go for?

This is the TV tuner, you would need to choose a head unit that is compatible with it (most are)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alpine-TUE...item4175b2734c If wired in correctly you can control the tuner with its remote via the head unit without the need for an extra remote sensor (only if the head unit is also Alpine) You will also need these aerials http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alpine-KAE...item3a862b5af5 I found the best reception with having one on the front windscreen (tucked right down near the dash, could hardly be seen) and the other on a rear side windows tucked right in the corner. Be aware, the reception is not always 100% when you are moving. In the area I live Id say it was around 75-90%. Built up areas can be worse. On a long trip you sometimes have to rescan to the nearest tv mast, that is just a press of the SCAN button and takes 3 or 4 minutes. The only other thing to note, the tuner box is not that small and has to be mounted quite close to the head unit unless you want to extend the harnesses. Ive not looked behind the dash on an E9x but I was able to mount mine hidden behind the dash on my RS4 Last edited by dest; 01-14-2014 at 04:29 AM.. |

I don't think there's a lot of space back there unless the double din unit is smaller front to back - with the Pro Nav fitted to my e90, it was a very tight squeeze just getting the extra quadlocks for the Gladen/Mosconi loom
