Replacing Cowl Filters
As i have mentioned before I replaced my OEM HVAC Filters with the JB Cowl filters and trust me a HUGE differance in the A/C , before the change to get my car to get cold I had to click it at 70-72 degrees Fahrenheit, after the Mod(btw very easy) I have at 76 degrees cause it gets to DAMN cold for my old ass. Here are the pics some blurry but viewable as you will see the OEM HVAC filter is DIRTY and of course BMW has not changed it in 38k, so word to the wise verify your HVAC filter and your air intake filter cause mines have not been changed ok!!

I would be more concerned about the rain or water from washing my car going in there, than saving a few pounds of weight.
It seems that a lot of parts are being exposed by removing that black tray. |

BTW the HOOD cover up and over plus RUBBER gasket protects it

its just a battery cable and there is a fair amount of slack. You could just let it hang on the engine cover or if you want it could be zip tied up by the firewall

I agree. I wouldnt remove that tray either. Unless you are planning on dumping a bunch of other parts also to add up weight, that 10 lbs doesnt amount to anything and it provides good peace of mind and possibly some rigidity. Also probably helps keep the incoming cabin air a little bit cooler by not pulling straight from the engine compartment

Hey, guys, FYI, for those who want the extra room but a more OEM look, this is another option (sorry, I'll try to take a better pic in the daytime tomorrow)…
I had to replace my carbon filters anyway, so I retrofitted in the M3 cowl. It supposedly loses 5 of the 10 lbs lost by the Burger Cowl Filters, gives you the peace of mind of knowing that no water is going anywhere its not supposed to (although I understand that this is probably a non-issue), and definitely frees up some space for access to hard to reach bits (i.e. that one engine acoustic cover bolt) or accessories being mounted into the engine bay. *cough...catch can...cough cough*

Note that you need two extra screws and you may want to install a new steal (or at least reinstall the old) which looks to be left out in that pic |

AEM dryflow (off amazon). No gains; just freeing up room as I try to figure out spacing for some things. The noises are purdy, though. I have mixed feelings about it from a design standpoint, but no losses according to TDIs logs.
