Newbie looking to buy a E92 coupe 335i....

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a E92 335i coupe in the next few months. What are the pros and cons etc? I'd be looking at tuning it aswell so what are they capable of before hitting problems?

I currently drive a Focus ST at 318bhp 385ibft

Please don't bite my head off

I made the same move late 2012 from a ST to a 335i

The 335i will feel slower at 1st until you realise that it is just a whole lot smoother in the way it delivers it's power. Fuel consumption wise, will be about the same. My ST on race map would average 22mpg and that is easily obtainable in the 335i.

Power , well the world is your oyster to a certain extent. From basic remaps to full blown Turbo conversions and Meth.

N54 is known to be the engine that gets the biggest gains currently and the N55 is a bit more reliable so its upto you which way you go there.

What are your requirements? I am about to sell my 07 low mileage 335i stock but with an Evolve-R cable and the stage1&2 map files, so you would have the software to apply as you add the modifications.

PM me if you are interested, It doesn't owe me anything and I'm only looking to get anything more than the pathetic PX offer.

Don't even think about modifying a 335i....your bank balance will be alot healthier if you just keep it stock and underwarranty

Thanks for the first few replies. I'm looking into tuning it with the usual, turbo back exhaust, Intercooler, decat, map. What kind of power will i be looking at with that? This would be my first RWD car but I get access to my dads Merc.

Here's my Focus currently:-

500bhp is well within reach, 600 if you go for stage 2 turbo's and meth. Its the torque that puts a smile on your face though.

since you asked...

lol...don't think the turbos will blow above 400bhp?!!!...lol...where did u get that from?

common issues:

injectors, vanos solenoid, plugs and coilpacks, hpfp, boost leaks, actuators, watch out for the bmw cracking wheels,

I think if you search, you will find loads.

Another forum good for tuning is the n54 one...

Welcome!!

Low 400's with the mods you have mentioned on a N54..

Full stage 2 here consist of

Intercooler -Lots of big brands but mainly alot buy from USA

Tune - either JB4 P&P or Cobb tuning device are the tops for flexibility and performance gains ( with the option to switch maps at your convenience )

Dual cone intake

AR downpipes - Although many have said good things about VSRF ( i will be upgrading mine during the summer too)

This alone will take you to low 400's. Anythhing after, you are looking at Meth and turbo upgrades, but you will need some form of brake upgrade too.

Hy-bird turbo's will bring out 500ish!!

Common faults are turbo wastegate rattle , doesn't affect performance but it's not nice to hear.

Injectors - older parts should be replaced by bmw with a recalled however these can get tired out and cause rough idle etc.

High pressure fuel pump - also known to cause rough idle but it is rare in the U.K or i have been told. I am on my third one.

Vano's soleniods do get tired out, easily replaced DIY or it just a clean.

bar the turbo the others are really small problems..

Never heard of a blown turbo yet but people do get the turbo replace because of the rattling sound...

Manual is very rare!

car made after 09/2007 has lower tax rate

Hold out for a manual it's worth it...

As above, look at a few and if you can get a diagnostics done before you pull the trigger.

You'll probably need a new DMF/Clutch on a MT if you are going above 450bhp too especially on older cars where the clutch will be nearing the end of its lifetime anyway. I'd start light if its your first RWD until you find the limits a bit. With 400bhp it is easy to turn the car around where a FWD will just under steer.
