Shifting Questing?

Under hard acceleration [5K RPM+], does any one shift from 1st to 3rd [directly]? If yes, why?

Skipping a gear would not let you accelerate as fast, not to mention it probable takes longer to gor from 1st to third.

Why would you do this??

I occasionally do, but not for hard acceleration. Just from stop to the 30mph speed limit. I'm basically idling in 3rd, then 4th.
Under hard acceleration, never. The power band is broad, but not that broad.
Corvettes lock out some gears for the CAFE standards. Anyone know which?

i did the 3rd to 5th shift with my previous car sometimes, usually when going up freeway on-ramps. 3rd was a good gear to pull up to highway speeds and once i got there, i would just put it directly into 5th for cruising. there's nothing "wrong" about skipping a gear as long as u do it smoothly (i.e. u would have to almost max out 1st before u should go into 3rd to avoid lugging the engine or you would have to rev match quite a bit to go from 4th to 2nd).

I never skip gear go from 1st to 5 or 6th. There is no reason why one should ever try especailly in a BMW. You don't really want to lug your engine and bad for your tranny. IF I drive a truck or a Jeep with granny gears, I often skip the 1st and go into 2nd gear. Or I when going up hill in third gear and after reach the top I pop in the fifth gear and let her cruise downhil. HTH.

I do the 4th to 2nd every now and then...its not that bad...but 1st to 3rd...i cant see any reason why this would come in handy...

as someone else has already mentioned...i often go from 4th on an onramp right down to 6th once im on the highway....there really is no need to put it in 5th for 2 seconds.

I often skip 1st (drive off from 2nd) when starting from a hill (downward, or slight slope downwards) and often change from 3rd straight to 5th when turning a corner and cruising into a slower speed zone. (pre 6-spd, I'll have to re evaluate after my 330i arrives in 2 weeks!!)
