Question In manual: BMW recommends BP fuels

This isn't in my older E90 manual but I read the F30 one online.

Does anyone here only put BP in their F30 because the manual says that?!?!?!?

I only use BP - I actually didn't know about the recommendation .

There is no doubt in my mind that the engine runs better for it . In fact I would say shell super is the same quality as bp regular

For me: Shell V-Power Nitro+ Diesel. It's brilliant.

I use Tesco! I get clubcard points, and usually 10-15p off a litre from fuelsave!

Never caused any problems as far as i can tell!

I just can't justify £10-15 a tank more for bp/shell super diesel!

I've checked on that petrol prices website and they sell this stuff around my way - and it's 9p a litre cheaper than my usual Ultimate. I think I may have to give it a go.

I compared BP and Shell and Shell won hands down for power, smoothness and fuel economy.

+1 runs really well on it too. I also stick a tank of Shell V Power or BP ultimate in every 4/5 fills

BMW recommends BP because BP pay them to put it in the manuals - simple marketing. Nothing to do with BP being "better" for the car.

Does it not all come from the same refineries anyway. It is like washing powder trying to pretend they are different through advertising and some added supposedly magic ingredient to charge more for.

Same with the oil. Dont BMW "recommend" Castrol too. http://castroledge.com/partners/bmw

In my 320i I tend to use Esso, simply because it's the cheapest in the area and on my commute. Tend to go for Super Unleaded if prices not too bad and i'm feeling generous. Next cheapest on my route is a Shell and have same policy. Not noticed much difference between standard and Super/V-Power IMO.

Was wondering about fuel additives. Is it worth a bottle of redex every now and then?

Have to agree about no noticeable difference between Standard and V-Power fuels. My old E46 330i showed a noticeable difference in performance, smoothness, and even the sound of the engine being quieter at tickover. The 335i doesn't seem to care so much.

Most of these additives are rubbish. The fuels we use have enough detergents to keep engines clean.

Now having said all this, if you do wish to to add something, buy it from this company which has excellent products:

Like many i've seen the various tests on tv and my conclusion is negligible performance difference and the benefit in engine maintenance likely to be seen by the second or third owner, not you!

I guess my balance is to use standard (but not supermarket) fuels and put a tank of super in every now and then.

As I understand it the "super" fuels are created by chucking some "Additive"
into the tanker anyway. It is all refined together up until the final stage.

I used to use super unleaded in my TFSI VAG engines but I've never tried any premium diesels. Mainly because most of these cars with light modification can be made to run on chip fat so I fail to see how the engine can be that "picky". Not very scientific I know but even sitting in my £40k, precision built, German sports saloon I don't feel that far removed from something made by Massey Ferguson.

That said, I'll go with your theory dopper and fill it up with the good stuff tomorrow

For those who want an additive for a Diesel, this is the one to get as it does everything and there is no need to spend more:

Try it, you will feel the car to be more responsive. It won't make it a lot quicker, but in my opinion, it makes it more enjoyable to drive. I've put Ultimate in all of my BMW diesels - the 6 cylinders love it.

After a long drive down to mid France this summer I fuelled up with French supermarket super diesel. I wouldn't have normally bothered but it was about £1.25/L... My car has never ran so smoothly!

Since then I've been putting it in at my local BP garage every 4th tank, and my nearly 5 year old 320d has never sounded less diesel like. It also seems to be very slightly more economical and responsive since. The 600 odd mile drive home on super diesel may have cleaned something nicely and well cooked my DPF, but I'm happy enough that the super diesel helped.

I've always used BP, the garrage is only a few hundred yards away. Also, the tale goes that the local Tesco once had dirty fuel and damaged a few cars. Though, I don't know anybody who suffered...

Actually the only BP garage local to me did have some dirty fuel and damage a few cars. But hey, you only live once...
