BMW M4 vs Jaguar F-Type R

Just saw the first official Jaguar F-Type R. It is a stunner.

This is the only car to have shaken my belief that the M4 will be my next car.

I now await the review of them both... then the test drives.

Well done Jaguar!!!

Welcome to 2009.

All joking aside, two totally different cars. XFR is aimed at M5, not M3/M4. It's also a very heavy car weighing close to 2 tons vs. 1.5 tons or less for M3/M4.

But I do love the looks of the XFR, especially the face lifted version with XJ-like headlights.

No XF-R but F-Type R.
It's stunning but it's a British car...

Indian owned - British design and manufacture. The F-Type is an amazing 2 seater. I've never driven one, all I can say is that I challenge anybody to find me a negative written or video review.

What is that supposed to mean? Surely if we are talking about premium sports cars then Great Britain has the best along side of Italy.

I make it no secret that I'm a longtime fan of both Jag and Aston, but I can see where "British sportscars" have lost much of their old prestige in recent years. Jag and Aston both lost a step while under Ford ownership (for a number of reasons; not necessarily a "Ford" specific problem), and--despite still making some good cars during this time period--people noticed.

Jag is coming on strong now though; I look forward to seeing more of the F-Type variants.

Comparing the M4 to the F-Type R doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering the approximately $35k price difference.

F-Type Base or F-Type S are the more relevant comparison.

if you look back we compare to Porsches and GTRs. Spec and price of Jag not fully known yet I believe. We do know it will be cheaper than the convertible. Plus BMW extras are renowned. I actually have a feeling they may produce a performance model (like the M5) which will be the one to beat.

Let's wait and see anyway!!

I can honestly say I'd never own a British car, and I'm British.

I have a Discovery 4 (LR4) and my wife has a Range Rover Sport and they are both lovely vehicles. They were unreliable back when they were wholly British but with BMW, then Ford then Tata ownership, they have become very very nice to own.

British cars always rub me the wrong way...I always think that they break down a lot. Of course I never drove one so that may be why.

F-Type is a two-seater so in that regard it faces the same challenges to make a case for itself as a good DD that a C7 does. However, it is saddled with the additional drawback of being priced very high for its performance. To get to the 500hp+ models (V8 S or R depending on roadster or coupe) you need to spend GTR or C2S like money, not to mention the coming C7 Z06/7 which will quite possibly be legendarily good. So now you are going against those cars to make your value equation balance out. To me the F-Type comes in overpriced by a good 25%. To justify it against what else is out there, you really do have to have a special desire for the leaping feline.

Also, for those of us who lease the Jaguar residuals are horribly low and lease costs are crazy high.

The F-type does look fantastic though.

I've track driven both this summer. The Supercharged V8 in the Jag is amazing, the steering is spot on paddle shifters with the 8 speed transmission (I believe) were very responsive. My heart was pounding driving that car and the sound is stunning!!!!!!!! Its an amazing drivers car. That being said the M3 is more of a GT feel with heavier body and more roll. A bit slower around the track but for a driver car in real life, I still love the M3. The Jag was very impractical for me, can't store ANYTHING in the boot. But like everyone else said, THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CARS, so buy one of each.

You can download the brochure off the Jag USA site.

And yeah, I agree with you, people on this board have been comparing the M3/4 to the Carrera S, GTR, C7.

So yeah, I don't see what's wrong comparing this car too.

Me too. Except the 99k price tag. At that point its porsche or jag. And no manual.

I've always loved Jags, and this is awesome. If the V8 model weren't $100k and I didn't need a backseat, I would totally pick this over an M4.

This car is all about looks. It does look good, but it can't compete against the Corvettes, the 911, and the GT-R in this price range.
