I bet that cost is part of the reason. To backlight a movable control requires optic fibre, hollow components and using translucent white plastic inserts. Compare this to how what they are doing currently for the vent wheels (solid black plastic with white paint).
Audi do a really nice job on their vent controls which are all backlit at night with small triangles along the edge of the wheels which increase slightly in size to indicate which way you turn the wheels to increase airflow them more. But Audi's attention to even the small details and their high-tech look is excellent and slightly ahead of the competitors. I don't buy into the argument that you wouldn't need to see them at night as your wouldn't need to adjust the airflow as I do this occasionally in my current car. Having said that, this is a nitpick and I still think the detail and elegance of the E90 interior is very impressive. Well spotted though!!! |

Regarding this, the E90 is way ahead, attention-to-detail wise of the X3. I drove one as a loaner for two days and was thoroughtly unimpressed. NO backlighting on any of the on/off vent switches or the hot/colb knob. The plastics felt very cheap as well.
The good thing was when I got my car back, it made me

I too got an X3 loaner. I was rushed and had the choice of an X3 or a 330i. I was thinking M3. Duh. Had to be too good to be true, but what the hell, I'll try an X3. Was not nice at all. I did not see any point in the steptronic. Sport mode, maybe. It was dirty, butts and all. Yuck.
