N47 Timing Chain Problems

There are some stories on the web about people who had timing chain problems with the N47 diesel models. These were from engine models produced a few years ago. I don't see posts here about it here but I'm wondering if anyone has heard whether this problem was resolved. The fact that the timing chain in the N47 is at the back of the motor makes it a difficult problem to repair and I plan to keep the car a long time. I'm considering the 328d model because of the better mileage over the 328i and was hoping there was some fix to reassure me.

Generally thought to be a problem from 2007 to 2009 model years. There have been several part updates of chains, sprocket and tensioners. I've seen no reports of chain breaks after 2011 although some spotty reports of chain rattling, but no breaks. It is a pain to fix a rattling chain, but they did do something to make it a little easier: The sprocket is not welded to the camshaft anymore necessitating a total replacement of cam to replace the sprocket.

I researched this quite extensively when I bought mine.

Here in Russia there are a lot of chain problem cars. And the mount is growing.

Check the sound:

Not my car.) But from Russian bimmer forum.
Sound appeared at 15 000. Now 30 000 km.

My friend also had this problemon F30 320d. The problem was due to the chain tensioner.

I couldn't tell from the sound in that video if there was a problem, it sounded like a diesel to me.

Well, last night I put a 2014 328d on order, Mineral Gray... hope I don't develop this timing chain problem I went back and forth on the 328i/328d decision. Maybe I'll make a habit of recording the engine sound periodically to keep my sanity.

Sounds normal to me as well. A timing chain problem will sound like a bag of ball bearings in metal coffee can.

A lot of these problems are reckoned to be down to the (stupid) practice of extended service intervals - especially prevalent in Europe to keep fleet running costs down.
Cars that have an engine oil + filter change every 10k miles are far less likely to have this issue, it's mainly those which have only been every 18k which suffer from this

Happened to my friends 1 Series at about 80,000 miles. I think that the additional shock loading of the chain etc, caused by the additional starts due to the auto stop/start system, could be the culprit but I am only speculating.

Hi guys,
My previous car use to be a X3 F25 as well as actual one, but N47 2.0d engine MY 2012. After only 5000 km my engine was removed/lowered for timing chain replacement. They have offered replacement car and very good deal for warranty extension as well. Right before the end of two years BMW standard warranty, the noise came back...at only 31.000 km. I had to trade it back for a X3 F25 N57 3.0d finally, on a good deal I would say.

happened to me, I heard strange rattle noises. dealer had to order new parts and claimed that it is fixed. the rattle noise is not there any more, but I don't know if the problem was fixed. I have to live with it now, the dealer wouldn't offer me any trade in.
