328i getting low mpg around town
I have only had my 2008 328i sedan for a few days now. I probably have put about 100 miles on it so far. I have driven it 95% in town for short trips. I've been grannying it also. I did floor it once in D, took one trip in DS, and took drove a few miles using the paddle shifters.
I haven't hand calculated the mpg yet but the Computer shows 17mpg. Imo this is not bad considering my driving style BUT I was hoping for something around 20mpg around town. Is 17mpg about right? Is the computer pretty accurate (hopefully my true mpg isn't much lower)? Any suggestions? |

Computer is pretty accurate. Since your car is a 2008, the question becomes when was the car tuned properly? Are your spark plugs, oil, fluids etc... changed? Do you have the correct air pressure in your tires? How much weight is in the car... All of these things affect your mileage. So if you were hoping for something higher, you may want to check these things.

Wow. I guess I am lucky.
How is your driving style? I want to drive more aggressively since I just bought the car and it is my first Bimmer. So hypothetically what would my mpg be around town if I: Granny: 17mpg is what I am doing now Moderately: Aggressively: |

I have an 07 328i... Love my car but around town it does burn through gas. GREAT for roadtrips though!

Yeah... I get about the same mileage. If you live somewhere with a lot of expressways, then you can expect 19ish. I don't believe people when they say they get 20 mpg around town in a 328i lol.

My E90 325i will get 20 MPG city when driven conservatively. I guess that extra 15 HP that they gave the 328 just kills the mileage, lol!
My tuned 335i gets 17 when driven moderately, which would be aggressive in a 328. BTW, I ditched the run flats on the 325. That could be a difference. |

Sounds about right.
For me, around 18-19mpg (I've seen it dip to 14-16mpg though before, easy) in '09 328i xDrive - 28-30mpg highway, depending on length of trip. 22-23mpg in '06 325i 6MT - 32-33mpg highway.

When I got the car the MPG showed 99.99 until I resetted it.
So my 328 doesn't get great gas mileage around town but does well on the highway and long trips? The vehicles I have owned usually would get about 4mpg more on long highway trips. If I get 17mpg around town, what can I expect driving an 800 mile drive going an average of 70-75mpg? |

I used to wonder the same thing. I got my 07 328xi a couple months ago and I haven't been able to get more than 18 city. At first I thought it was because of the awd but it seems like most 328s get that type of mpg with city driving. Try coasting as much as you can

I've had many, many, many 328xi loaners over the last 6 yrs, and I would get roughly 17 driving around town (I had one for over 3 wks and found this number to be consistent). With the same driving and a 335i, I get around 20-21. I attribute the difference to the auto, AWD and 328 motor.

I get 21 MPG on my car in the city. It really depends on how you drive. It is possible to get that mileage in the city. I get 19 MPG in heavy traffic.
