Winter wheels perform better if the temp is below 7 degrees. They also shift water more effectively than summer tyres. So snow is just one of the reasons to have them.

Ahh! Thanks for clarifying this, I've always thought they were only good with snow, guess I was wrong and there is more benefit to them than just that,

By the way, the wheels look great, pretty similar style to the M Performance wheels.

Wheels look very good. I was contemplating getting black wheels if I could not obtain genuine BMW wheels.

The wheels look small in them wheel arches though. What size are they?

I know Xdrive keep a higher ride but mine don't have that much of a gap?

@Englishbloke:
Lovely car. A bit boy racer with those wheels, but hey, for winter ones, it's best to have black. Now you can be Father Christmas for all and sundry.

They look great on the car. Whats the wheel model and manufacturer?
The black goes great with blue.

Thanks guys!

They are 18", from BMW. Will check the model number. Look a little small compared to the 19" summers I had on, but I'm pleased with them.

Supposed to be £2,100 with tyres I think, negotiated when I got the car though.

Ps. Their is a large space in the arch because it's parked on a hill, the gap is much smaller on the back when parked in that position.

Yes, winter tyres are to be recommended in cold weather. In addition to their ability to handle snow/ice/water, winter tyres have softer rubber and retain grip below about 7c, which summer tyres don't.

In icy conditions, 2wd with winter tyres destroys 4wd with summer tyres, see this video http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...rip-test-video. Obviously for stopping, there's no difference. In some countries, eg Germany, it's illegal to drive with summer tyres in the winter.

Having said all that, I still haven't got mine - I was held back somewhat by a piece of incompetence from my local dealer (Cooper Reading). I got an email from Cooper BMW with details on a promotion winter tyres, so I popped in to ask. For starters, nobody knew about the promotion. Secondly, I told them I needed 18 inch minimum because I have msport brakes. They told me it made no difference. Thirdly, I said I needed the circumference of my wheel+tyre to be approx equal to my current. They said it made no difference. Fourthly, I asked if they'd do a deal on the list price. They said no, BMW dealers can't do deals on part prices. Basically the guy had no idea what he was talking about, plus he had a bit of an attitude. Suffice to say I won't be darkening their doors again. Ridgeway in Hook, Hampshire seem so much more knowledgeable/courteous and isn't much further.

I did exactly the same as you - got them fitted yesterday. They are 18" Matt black style 405.

Rubbish pic I know but I think they look great!

Mega!

Yes, the dealers have no clue about winter wheels. It's been a long journey to this point. They suggested 16" steels to start with... With msport brakes!?

Tell me about it - it took 3 attempts to persuade them that the second hand set of 17" they were throwing in as part of the deal wouldn't fit, but thankfully once they realised they offered a set of new 18's. It was either these or some ferric grey ones, and having looked at them both on the car I couldn't resist the black.

Forecast for bad weather from Tuesday as well - bring it on!!

This is the nicest winter wheel/tyre setup I've seen! Very tempted to get them for my sapphire black F30. What model number are they? As I can't seem to find them on the BMW UK website. Also what sort of price would/should I be looking negotiate? Thanks.

Matt black style 405. I was offered some by BMW direct on eBay, and quoted a 7-8 week lead time and a price of £510 per wheel (including sottozero's)

I preferred getting them included as a make or break for the new car deal
