M235i got anything standard over M135i that's enough to warrant the extra £2k?

Shouldn't that be ~£4K extra?

people will obviously compare ££ or $$ but the whole point of BMW making separate models is so that it becomes a performance version of that model. A tangible driving difference.

A 3 series coupe just drove like a 3 series.. the 4 doesn't, anyone who has driven both remarks how much more focused and direct it is.

So an M235i will be a better handling, more focused, faster version with coupe looks. That to me is worth the additional premium. It is no longer a £2k premium to make the back end look different like the 1 hatch > 1 coupe was.

Interesting comment, given the high critical response bestowed upon the M135i as one of the best cars BMW has built and the best one it currently does. Is the M235i going to be even better? I very much doubt that the M235i will be dynamically much different from the M135i.

And that comment sort of belittles the M3 against that of the M4?

Oh, and having driven a 428i M Sport, it didn't set me on fire with its superior credentials...!

And the M235i is still actually nearer £4K more, not £2K, than the 1.

I'm not arguing over a car that hasn't even been driven yet. I merely pointed out that that is the idea of the 2 series and the 4 series.

And it doesn't belittle the M3, the M4 should be better than the M3 ever has been, thats what we all want isn't it? progress?

The M3 isn't out yet either - I am comparing saloon/hatchback vs coupé like you: M3 = new saloon; M4 = new coupé/conv! You are effectively saying that the M3 isn't going to be as good (or equal to) the M4, if an M135i is inferior to the M235i? I don't believe that at all.

I think Leon was just referring how BMW execs are now claiming they are making there coupe variants slightly sharper and more performance oriented. The current evidence would go back to the current 335i vs. 435i.

I think the new M3 may be very slightly less sharp than the M4, but we don't know.

I also think the M235i is supposed to be slightly sharper than the M135i, I don't expect this to be a dramatic difference, but we will have to see.

I think that's what the BMW marketing machine wants us to believe and to help justify their price increases and the perceived notion that 4 is higher than 3; 2 is higher than 1, therefore the "next model up" and therefore worth more money.

As mentioned earlier, having driven a 428i M Sport, it's just a 2 door version of the saloon and in the flesh still isn't differentiated enough from its saloon cousin and with an identical interior - pretty poor really. And that would also seem to be reviewers' opinions in that it's more a grand tourer than a sports car!

Hopefully the 2, being smaller and derived from the M135i, will set that right, just like they DID do with the M135i and create another driving machine.

take a 1 series hatch back, give it better weight distribution, lower COG, set the dynamics of the car up for a more focused driving experience and it WILL be 'better' in terms of driving dynamics and performance.

As for how much? Agreed it isn't going to be light and day but disputing wether it will be better or not is a bit odd to me?

Interestingly, there's never been such a comparison within the BMW product range of a 3 door hatch versus the 2 door coupé equivalent (usually it's saloon vs coupé); they never did a 135i hatchback after all. I just don't think it's going to be much different on M135i (an already accomplished car) vs M235i and certainly not appreciable in everyday driving which most of these cars will experience.

And no, I don't own an M135i!

No I agree.... I have driven my mates M135i and loved it. Be happy if the coupe drives exactly the same as that!

I just think people saying "what spec" do I get for £X more are forgetting it isn't a different body shell dropped into the exact same platform like the older hatch>coupe versions.

I am interested in the LSD and the BMWP chassis.... hopefully this makes it a real quality handling car
