To anyone considering a 330.
I took delivery 13 days ago. Have only had it in eco pro and comfort.
Today I hit the majic 1200 mile mark. Sports plus and gearbox in sports was tried for the best part of 70 miles. Holy monster fudging trucking tanker son of a punt. I can't stop grinning like a Cheshire cat. This car has more than lived up to expectations. Unless Mercedes do something really bloody special I don't think I'll ever have a pointy star in my grills again. Full pics and review will be posted sometime soon. In the meantime I am way too busy driving. |

Enjoy it Andy, mine comes in two weeks and I cannot wait. The 1200 mile run in I recon will take me about two weeks, then i'm also looking forward to smoking the tyres.

Not fair... mine doesn't arrive till Christmas and with the miles I do it is going to take me two months to hit 1200 miles
Glad to know it lives up to your expectations. Out of interest, what has been your average MPG during the burn in period? |

Exactly. If Vanguard has special insider information that shows this is pointless, he should share it. I don't understand why BMW would put this in otherwise. To pad out the pages of the manual?

I have a lot of time for people with the patience and diligence to break-in their car.
Sadly though I have very little patience and could not bring myself to wait 1,200 miles before redlining it! I have no doubt that BMW know far more about my car than I do but presumably there is a large margin of error built into this recommendation. I suspect a systematic approach over a day's driving of 200-300 miles would be fine: bring the car up to operating temp, stepped increases in revs, controlled stops to bed-in the brakes etc. No evidence to back it up though! |

Yes, I'm not implying that your car will spontaneously combust if you don't follow BMW's suggested break-in routine, but they must have data from a large amount of testing that suggests an improvement in engine longevity or other metric.

I did a bit of research in to this a few years ago when I was waiting for a new Civic Type-R to arrive.
Wearing an engine in was traditionally required to allow any defects in the manufacturing process to sort themselves out e.g. flanges / burrs etc. caused by machining that could cause damage to piston seals etc. The argument against it nowadays is that manufacturing tolerances are a lot more accurate and testing & quality control regimes identify problems before the product leaves the factory. Every engine is run up beyond it's normal operating range before it leaves the factory so in theory someone has already taken it past the red line. That said, after weighing up the evidence I still decided to put 1k miles on the clock before I gave it some beans and I intend on doing the same again when my new 330d arrives at the end of the year. My day job is helping people maintain bits of machinery and my office is full of evidence that demonstrates how reliability is influenced by a bit of care and protection - not to mention simple stuff like following the guidance an Engineer has taken the time to write. Besides - foreplay is half the fun (as I am frequently reminded)!! |

I never thrash any car when cold, but as soon as the oil is up to temp all bets are off
Numerous dealers have told me not to worry about running it in, firstly its got a warranty and secondly I won't keep it outside of that warranty period I have always found cars burn less oil and develop more bhp if they are gunned from the start, there is evidence to suggest this, just Google it Just to add I do let the brakes bed in gently but not the engine, they are run to the red line in the factory on a test bench to make sure they are ok |
