A little confused about the 435I Automatic transmission
Hey guys, im currently in the market for either a 335I or a 435I, and ive been doing some research. I keep running into articles that say the DCT is only in the awd 435. Is this true? Does the 435 not have a DCT dual clutch transmission?
Thanks Guys |

I may just need to do some reading, but I feel like this is a bad thing. How would this transmission compare to lets say the DSG from a VW (I currently have a r32).

Never drove a DCT or DSG so can't help on that. PS: I suggest you try to schedule a test drive, you can be the best judge. Also keep in mind there are 2 auto transmission available for these cars: The regular auto, and the sport auto. |

According to the bmw configurator the 335I has the option for the sports drive but the 435I does not give me a sport auto option (I think its standard).
Also, I kinda hope that even with this non dual clutch transmission you still get that pop/blip sound during shifts. I was a little bummed out when I found out my R32 wasn't gonna make cool little noises during shifts like the GTI does. |

I drove a 335is with DCT before, honestly, there is not much difference between the DCT and Sport automatic transmission offered for 335i and 435i. |

Definitely try one before ruling it out. The ZF8 really upped the game for a non-DCT auto gearbox IMHO. It's why I have a 435i now

The answer is, neither the 335 nor the 435 have DCT. Whatever article stated the 435 xDrive has DCT is incorrect. |

I was confused myself, so I came in here to get the truth about the cars transmission. I wasn't sure if it was an article that was written before the actual transmission was announced.

435i does come with the sport 8 speed as standard. I just got mine on Friday. I had the 8 speed in my 535i and I can tell you this version is smooth but crisp and precise when you need it to respond. The response from paddle shifting is instant. Take it for a test drive in comfort then in sport mode. You will leave with a grin.

I have the 435 auto and previously had a 135 DCT. The DCT felt more aggressive, especially with downshifting. But, it is only the "feel" and not the speed of shifting

I have owned both DCT (E92 M3) and 8HP. They are not similar, in my experience. The DCT truly feels like a manual transmission without a clutch, the 8HP is just a really good automatic. I miss the DCT.

IMO the biggest difference between the ZF8 and a DCT (have one on my S4 and GF's GTI) is the "grab" of the transmission under semi WOT and high rev range...and the rev matching downshifts. The downside to DCT's is awkward creep (idling forward) and sometimes clunky 1-2 2-1 shifts while coming to a stop or pulling out. The ZF8 is very smooth in all cases, and about 70% as harsh/satisfying under very spirited driving. But if you want a manual, then there's not much to debate. DCT's might perform like manuals, but the driving engagement still isn't the same. My .02 |

I've had lot of seat time in VW DSG products and the ZF in the F30/F31 is much better. Shifts just as fast if not faster but you don't get any of the jerking and general harshness of DSG. Plus with the different settings you can go from butter smooth to sporty. With DSG it was harsh or harsh + high revs, the sport mode on DSG was completely useless. That being said, on a 335 I would be tempted to take the 6MT. But thats an other debate!

Yeah my number one complaint about the DSG is the clunkiness, I wasn't sure if BMW was smoother with their DCT. I guess the auto will be a bit more grown up for me, kinda why im leaning more towards the auto at the moment.

Go test drive one and you'll see how you like it. I had no trouble test driving the 435i at 2 dealerships when I visited my local BMWs. The 2nd dealership actually made me drive the car since I told them I already test drove one before. |

Do the dealers let people test drive these cars easily? I feel like since its supposedly a "rare" car they wont allow it. Like when my r32 first came out most dealers would not allow test drives.

I had a 2012 Golf R DSG before my 335i Sport auto and the gearbox in the BMW is WAY smoother and is just as quick in manual mode. It might be slower on paper but that is not something you pick up on when you drive the car.
